0:02 hey everybody welcome back to Yo deer
0:04 hunters today I'm going to give you my
0:07 top five cartridges for hog hunting
0:09 so stick around let's see what we come
0:15 [Music]
0:16 I guess the first thing I need to talk
0:19 to you about is why these five
0:21 cartridges have become my favorite for
0:23 hog hunting one of the top reasons is
0:26 that most of these cartridges can be
0:29 found in any type of rifle so if you
0:32 like a bolt action rifle like your ready
0:35 roll deer hunting rifle or if you prefer
0:38 one of the new modular rifles as I like
0:39 to call them
0:42 I want to be very uh
0:44 family oriented and in this video
0:47 because not only are these cartridges
0:49 great for hog hunting
0:53 some of them are really good for young
0:55 Hunters of the five cartridges I've
0:57 selected today
0:59 three of them will fit in a magazine
1:03 with a length of 2.26 which is a length
1:05 of a 223 the first cartridge on my list
1:08 is the 223 Remington I think this is
1:10 about the the minimum caliber that you
1:12 could use for hog hunting it's it's
1:14 really good for the first shot because
1:17 usually you know the first shot
1:20 it's up here in the cranial area and it
1:22 doesn't take too much lead and power to
1:24 put that hog down on the first shot
1:26 after they scatter you may have a little
1:28 bit more of a problem bringing them down
1:32 with a 223 but there aren't loads and
1:34 bullets available that make them pretty
1:37 effective on bringing Hogs down with
1:39 body shots
1:40 because you know every hog out there
1:43 you're going to be hunting doesn't weigh
1:46 you know 200 pounds half dogs you're
1:47 going to see out there are small they're
1:49 they're young honks so you know if you
1:52 come across a Sounder that has a a large female
1:54 female
1:58 and you know some half-grown pigs then
1:59 you're going to take that
2:01 sell out with the first shot and then
2:04 you've got you know I'm gonna a little
2:06 ones scattered then you've got a better
2:07 chance of taking them down with a body
2:09 shot with a cartridge like the two two
2:12 three if you're going to hunt with a a
2:15 223 for hog hunting then you need to pay
2:16 particular attention to the bullet you select
2:17 select
2:20 probably a soft point
2:22 or some of the the heavier bullets in
2:26 the 60s 62 or 75 grain range
2:30 most rifles for 223 are
2:32 are have a barrel twist that will handle
2:35 a 75 grain bullet or at least both of
2:38 them I do I have a Tikka and I have you
2:39 know two or three other two to three
2:42 barrels uh with different types of
2:45 rifling or Different Twist rates but
2:48 they all handle a 75 grain bullet
2:50 one of the the best bullets I found is
2:53 is running from hornaday it's a 75 grain
2:56 hollow point but it doesn't
2:58 you know go in and explode like a
3:01 varmint bullet it's a 75 grain hollow
3:04 point that actually acts more like a
3:06 soft point bullet it goes in at
3:09 mushrooms and with that 75 grains of
3:11 lead it'll penetrate into the lungs and
3:14 put that hog down pretty quickly next
3:16 cartridge I want to talk to you about
3:18 is on the opposite end of the spectrum
3:22 it's the 308 Winchester the 308
3:25 Winchester is great on Hogs I mean if
3:26 you really want to put them down right now
3:27 now
3:30 I mean this is it it shoots 150 grain
3:33 bullet and about 2850 feet per second
3:36 and you know it'll blast right through a
3:39 200 pound hog with this cartridge you
3:40 don't have to worry about penetration
3:43 it's going to penetrate and there's all
3:45 kinds of ammunition out there there's
3:48 all kinds of Brands out there and this
3:50 cartridge also is chambered in just
3:53 about every rifle available and every
3:55 type of rifle available you know you can
3:57 get a pump action you can get a bolt
3:59 action you can get a modular rifle
4:03 there's single shot rifles I think uh
4:05 some pistols are chamber for this in in
4:08 the the old single shot pistols but it
4:10 has a lot of power
4:13 and you know if you can stand the recoil
4:17 this cartridge will get the job done and
4:20 not only is it good for uh hog hunting
4:24 it's good just for just about everything
4:27 now it's a little heavy you know it's
4:30 still a little too heavy for uh farmer
4:32 hunting and but if you don't have one
4:34 rifle and you want a deer hunting rifle
4:36 a hog hunting rifle and occasionally
4:39 take a coyote you know you can do it
4:41 with a 308 so
4:42 so
4:51 the next cartridge on my list is very
4:55 similar to a 223 and it's a 22 Nosler
4:58 the original like a 22 dollar is because
5:00 of the high velocity and the heavier
5:03 bullets that can be shot in a small
5:06 frame rifle any rifle that has a
5:08 magazine length of 2.26 the same as a
5:11 223 will also
5:13 chamber a
5:15 22 Nosler
5:18 so what nauser did was they took a a 6.8
5:21 SPC case that the military had been
5:23 experimenting with and they nicked it
5:26 down a 22 caliber and what you have is a
5:29 little bit fatter case if you compare
5:32 them I'll try to get it up close here so
5:34 you can see it
5:36 this one has a rebated rim so it will
5:39 work with a 223 bolt face so
5:41 you know it'll work in your rifle all
5:43 you do is the chambering is a little bit
5:45 different it's a little bit fatter holds
5:46 a little more powder and you get about
5:48 250 feet per second
5:51 more velocity out of any given bullet
5:55 so I mean you can use like 60 and 70
5:57 grain bullets
6:00 75 grain bullets and they will shoot as
6:02 fast as a 55 grain bullet will in this
6:05 223 so you're getting a lot more power but
6:06 but
6:08 you know if you're going to use this for
6:09 hog hunting
6:12 the same thing applies as with the
6:14 223 you got to make sure you use it the
6:15 right bullet you need a heavily
6:18 constructed bullet like a Barnes you
6:21 know all copper bullet a Nosler accubond
6:24 bullet which you know you can buy these
6:26 from Nosler with different types of
6:27 bullets and different weights and
6:30 bullets and they're really effective on
6:32 a hog even you hit a body shot with this
6:36 22 nozzler uh it really going to do some
6:37 damage inside
6:41 so this thing shoots really flat
6:45 it packs a lot of energy and it will get
6:47 the job done on Hogs now if you've been
6:49 around this channel before you know I
6:52 like the 243 Winchester
6:54 243 Winchester nothing but a 308
6:57 Winchester that's nicked down to six
7:01 millimeter or 243 caliber
7:03 now this shoots a 100 grain bullet in about
7:04 about
7:07 now at 2950 feet per second it shoots 70
7:10 grain bullets then I like to shoot for
7:12 coyotes or Hogs
7:17 she's so thinking about 3 400 3500 feet
7:21 per second so it's it's really fast it's
7:23 really flat trajectory and it hits with
7:26 a lot of energy this is one of uh Doug's
7:29 favorites you know for coyote hunting
7:32 and hog hunting and deer hunting I mean
7:34 I've you've seen some of the videos you
7:35 know we've taken a couple of deer with
7:37 this with this cartridge it does a
7:39 really really good job you have to have
7:41 the medium frame bolt action rifle or
7:44 the large frame modular rifles for this
7:46 cartridge because it is the same length
7:48 as a 308
7:51 it packs a lot of punch it shoots really
7:54 flat you know shooting a 70 grain bullet
7:56 you can hit a four inch Target
7:58 Target
8:01 a totally dead center that's what we
8:03 call maximum Point Blank Range
8:06 out to about 275 yards so I mean this
8:09 thing shoots flat hits hard and it's
8:11 great for for hog hunting or any other
8:13 type of farming hunting I really highly
8:15 recommend it but when it gets really
8:17 down to it my favorite hog hunting
8:20 cartridge is a 6.5 Grendel
8:22 now I've written about this on my
8:26 website at theoderhunters.com
8:30 and I made a lot of videos about it but
8:31 when it really comes down to hog hunting
8:33 I don't know anything that's any better
8:36 than this because it's
8:39 a little 2.26 length cartridge that will
8:41 fit in any type of rifle I think there's several
8:42 several
8:44 manufacturers out there they all that
8:46 chamber this in bolt action rifles as
8:49 well as all the modular rifles the
8:52 cartridge shoots a 123 grain bullet at
8:54 about 2500 feet per second
8:58 and you can also buy a lighter bullets
9:01 in the 90 grain range Federal makes a
9:04 really nice 90 grain that's better for
9:06 coyotes but it will take a Hogs I'll
9:07 take a Hogs with those 90 grain bullets
9:10 and it puts them right down but for my
9:15 money this 123 grain Hornady SST or the
9:17 Nosler ballistic tip
9:20 you know they're just fantastic for for
9:22 hog rifles it has the ballistic
9:25 coefficient of about 510 so it shoots
9:26 really flat
9:29 so you know you can zero this thing for
9:31 200 yards in your in mid-range
9:33 trajectory only be about an inch and a
9:35 half or two inches high so you know you
9:37 can hit a four inch hard but it's
9:38 holding dead on out there you know all
9:40 the way out to 200 yards you can get
9:44 this chambered in the small Howa or CZ
9:46 rifles and it's within a little baby
9:49 frame because it's a 2.26 inch or you
9:50 get in the uh
9:54 Ruger makes it in their Ranch Rifle it's
9:58 just a really really good cartridge for
10:01 hog hunting it's got a small case
10:04 capacity so if you reload it doesn't
10:08 take a lot of powder but it has you know
10:11 just super performance for this size you
10:13 know I've taken deer with it and if
10:16 you're talking about a rifle and a
10:19 cartridge that's good for young shooters
10:21 or small frame shooters
10:25 this is about ideal I mean it has
10:27 virtually no recoil just about anybody
10:29 that's old enough to go deer hunting
10:32 okay shoot this and not flinch and not
10:34 be as afraid of the recoil so if you
10:36 have a young Hunter you might want to
10:38 look into this this this will put a deer
10:40 down pretty quickly I've shot you know a
10:42 couple of them and had no problem
10:46 finding them a shot you know probably
10:48 100 Hogs with this thing and it's and
10:51 it's it hasn't failed me yet that's my
10:54 top five cartridges for hog hunting I
10:56 know everybody's got their own own
10:57 favorites and I might have left yours
10:59 out and I know there's a lot more that
11:01 will get the job done so I just want to
11:03 say thanks for stopping by if you like
