0:17 thing that puts most if not all sleeping
0:19 bags on a Level Playing Field and today
0:21 I'm going to tell you what it is so

0:29 thing you need to know about sleeping
0:31 bags is they have multiple ratings that
0:33 can get kind of confusing for instance
0:35 this is the Nemo Sonic zero degree
0:38 sleeping bag this is a really nice
0:40 sleeping bag that you would think would
0:42 work all the way down to zero degrees
0:46 and it does well sort of you see pretty
0:48 much every sleeping bag has three
0:50 different ratings The Comfort rating the
0:53 limit rating and the extreme rating the
0:54 cover rating is the rating where
0:56 everyone including people who tend to
0:58 feel colder than others everyone will
1:00 feel warm in this bag at that
1:02 temperature and this Nemo bag has a
1:04 comfort rating of 14 degrees so everyone
1:06 will feel warm with some people even
1:08 feeling too hot in this bag at that
1:11 temperature but notice that Nemo doesn't
1:15 call this the Sonic 14 and 14 is a fair
1:17 distance away from zero so where did
1:20 they get the Zero from well that's the
1:22 limit rating of this bag or the
1:24 temperature where just about everything
1:26 is going to feel cold in this bag and
1:28 it's called The Limit rating because
1:30 it's the limit of what the bag can
1:31 realistically handle so at zero degrees
1:34 in this Bank you can expect to feel cold
1:36 even shivering curled up in a ball
1:38 fighting to stay warm but you won't be
1:41 in any danger you just won't be having
1:43 any fun either then there is the extreme
1:45 rating which is basically the survival
1:47 rating of the bag where theoretically
1:50 you won't die but you may not ever be
1:52 the same ever again and what exactly
1:53 that means whether or not that's
1:56 physical or psychological I don't really
1:57 know and to be honest I don't really
2:00 want to find out and this is the hard
2:01 part about buying sleeping bags this
2:03 Nemo bag has been independently tested
2:05 and certified by the international
2:08 organization of standardization or ISO
2:10 to perform at these temperatures but
2:12 companies don't have to get certified
2:15 they aren't regulated and even if they
2:16 choose to get certified they don't have
2:18 to use any of these certified ratings
2:20 they can put whatever number they want
2:22 on their bag like this Nemo bag even
2:24 though it says it's a zero degree bag
2:26 that's the limit rating and like I said
2:28 most people will feel cold at that
2:31 temperature so it's not really a zero
2:34 degree bag it's a 14 degree bag but Nemo
2:37 is calling it a zero degree bag now Nemo
2:39 isn't necessarily trying to be deceptive
2:40 they are a good company and it's
2:42 actually pretty common practice to list
2:45 the limit rating in the name of the bag
2:47 it's basically trying to communicate
2:49 this is the lowest realistic value that
2:51 this bag will work at but a bag that
2:53 does seem to be trying to deceive us is
2:55 this one from Ozark Trail I recently
2:57 picked up this Ozark Trail 10 degree bag
2:59 from Walmart this bag cost me less than
3:01 forty dollars and if you look right here
3:03 it says 10 degrees is the cover rating
3:05 which for 40 bucks is a really
3:08 impressive except if you look closely
3:10 there's a little asterisk there that
3:12 says that this is actually its limit
3:14 rating which means that 10 degrees in
3:16 this bag you are going to feel miserably
3:19 cold but you won't be in significant
3:21 danger if you look at the tag you'll see
3:22 that 10 degrees still isn't even the
3:24 real limit rating it's actually 12
3:26 degrees and the actual Comfort rating is
3:29 24 degrees and so you might write this
3:31 bag off as a cheap bag that's not worth
3:33 your money but the great thing about
3:35 this and the reason that I decided to
3:37 pick up this bag is because of this
3:39 right here just like the Nemo Sonic this
3:42 bag was independently certified using
3:43 the exact same procedures and
3:46 measurements and to be sure there are a
3:47 lot of differences between these bags
3:50 the Nemo is about 500 more expensive the
3:52 Nemo is filled with down where the Ozark
3:54 Trails filled with synthetic fill the
3:57 Ozark Trail weighs 5.7 pounds whereas
4:00 the Nemo only weighs 3 points six pounds
4:02 the Nemo has regulating gills that let
4:04 you vent out some of that heat if you're
4:06 feeling too warm in a bag it has nicer
4:08 construction materials zippers and more
4:11 there are reasons why the Nemo bag costs
4:14 more than the Ozark Trail but what puts
4:16 these two bags on an even playing field
4:19 is this ISO certification even though
4:21 they have different ratings because we
4:23 know these bags were tested and
4:24 certified using the same process and
4:27 procedures we have a way to compare them
4:29 and that is true of hundreds if not
4:32 thousands of bags all over the world the
4:33 catch is you almost always have to go
4:35 digging for this information it doesn't
4:37 have to be listed on the bag or the
4:39 labeling sometimes it's only on the
4:40 website or you may have to contact the
4:42 company directly to get the information
4:45 and some companies choose not to get
4:47 certified but the ones that do give you
4:49 an easy way to compare how the bagger
4:52 perform against other bags no matter the
4:53 price and now that we've talked about
4:55 affordable sleeping bags I want to talk
4:57 about some affordable boots from today's
4:59 sponsor nordicate specifically the

5:09 more on a pair of hiking boots but these

5:41 through reasonably deep water without
5:43 having to worry about your feet getting
5:46 wet now I don't always like water
5:48 resistant boots but there are some
5:50 specific situations that I always want
5:52 to have a pair on anytime I'm hiking in
5:55 snow and when I'm hiking in constant and
5:56 cold rain like I've experienced the
5:59 Pacific Northwest as long as you have a
6:01 good pair of Gators or rain pants that
6:02 can keep rain from running down your
6:04 legs and into the boots it's really nice
6:06 to be able to keep your feet dry
6:09 especially in cold persistent rain if
6:10 you're looking for a really good pair of
6:12 boots at an affordable price you really
6:14 should check out north of eight I've
6:15 been impressed with just how much boot
6:17 you get for the price the only thing I
6:19 can't speak to is a long-term durability
6:21 simply because I haven't had a chance to
6:23 wear these over extended periods of time
6:26 but based on what I've seen you'll be
6:28 hard-pressed to find a better boot at a
6:30 cheaper price check them out on Amazon
