0:02 there are horror stories about Indie
0:04 devs working with the publisher and
0:06 those Publishers scammed them I never
0:09 work with Publishers because I have no
0:12 trust in them or its system this is how
0:14 Publishers work in the realm of the game
0:16 development either you the game
0:18 developer contact the publisher because
0:20 you need funding or the Publishers
0:23 themselves contact you through email
0:26 Twitter Discord Facebook whatever to get
0:29 in contact with you sometimes Publishers
0:31 will hire a contractor pretty much some
0:33 marketing dude that has years of
0:35 experience in the game industry space
0:37 could be anything Community Management
0:40 public relations social media marketing
0:43 the list goes on when a publisher
0:45 becomes interested in your game they'll
0:46 talk to you and set up an appointment
0:49 what they are mostly interested in is
0:52 how big of a wish list the game has
0:54 because that's what Publishers want to
0:56 see how much money they can make that's
0:59 all they care about that's fine it's business
1:00 business
1:02 once they get what they want to hear
1:04 they ask when the game's going to be
1:07 released because they want to hear how
1:09 soon they can get paid again that's fine
1:12 it's business the next step after all
1:15 the talks the niceness the smiles the
1:18 negotiations happen and this is where I
1:21 see a problem with the Publishers right
1:23 now indie game developers should be
1:25 extremely wary of Publishers that offer
1:28 a 50 50 split when they only offer to
1:30 Market your game traditionally
1:34 Publishers take on a 30 split they give
1:36 you a large sum of money for Milestones
1:38 that the game has accomplished and they
1:40 market for you as well but Indie
1:42 developers don't get that at all and
1:44 they only get marketing and the
1:46 Publishers will sweet talk to you about
1:49 this is a great deal they will try to
1:51 convince you that that's all you need
1:53 because they have the network they have
1:56 the resources they're taking risk to
1:59 promote your game that's not true at all
2:01 these publishers aren't taking risks at
2:03 all because marketing is a zero dollar
2:05 budget in today's game industry
2:08 everything is online if you want to
2:11 Market post a YouTube video post it on
2:13 Instagram or Twitter make a tick tock
2:16 video but it'll take a while for you to
2:18 get your desired community and you have
2:20 to be consistent with your marketing
2:22 this is what Publishers would do if you
2:25 sign a 50 50 split in just marketing and
2:27 most times you can't even check if
2:29 they're doing their job it's not worth
2:32 it a good publisher will translate your
2:33 game and hire a professional translator
2:36 find your game Market your game using
2:38 paid ads Port your game to other
2:41 consoles at their expense and help you
2:44 participate in conventions or festivals
2:46 a good publisher should provide support
2:49 to help the Game grow further a bad
2:52 publisher would work on promises they
2:53 will translate your game using free
2:55 software or free community labor
2:58 basically unprofessional they would not
3:00 give you a single dime to your game they
3:02 will promise you that they will Market
3:04 your game but won't tell you exactly how
3:06 and will give you a grand speech of
3:09 trust me I know people I've been doing
3:12 this for years the Publishers will feel
3:14 uncomfortable giving out their clients
3:16 details to do a background check on them
3:18 to see if they're legit the Publishers
3:20 won't State what they will promise in
3:22 their contract and they will hide
3:24 whatever else they are doing from you
3:27 from your back basically misinforming
3:30 you until you sign the contract your job
3:32 is to figure it out and the best
3:34 indicator is to check the Publisher's
3:36 game list on Steam if they don't have
3:38 any games under their belt that's a red
3:40 flag if they don't have a lot of reviews
3:43 on the games they've published that's a
3:45 red flag look at the community in each
3:48 game the publisher has worked on and see
3:50 what the community has to say about the
3:53 game talk to the developers directly as
3:56 well because he or she could give you a
3:57 really good insight about working with
4:00 this publisher I know two horrible story
4:01 stories that have signed up with bad
4:04 Publishers one is the outbound ghost
4:05 which is an indie game that has been
4:08 released recently and another one is
4:10 called the sinking city which is almost
4:12 like a triple A game both of these games
4:14 had DMC their own games in order to
4:16 prevent the Shady Publishers from
4:18 stealing their work and profiting off of
4:21 them the story is crazy but it happens
4:24 it probably happens more times than we
4:25 know since a lot of the Indies out there
4:27 don't have a strong voice to ask for
4:30 help they get buried from the fear of
4:32 Publishers or nobody cares about that
4:34 particular developer this is pretty much
4:37 why I never work with Publishers there
4:39 are too many bad Publishers out there
4:41 and the deals they want to make are
4:43 never in favor for the Indie developers
4:45 it's always in the favor of the publishers
4:46 publishers
4:48 the Indie developers don't know that
4:50 because they get suckered in they don't
4:52 have the experience or guidance from the
4:54 other experienced game developers I've
4:57 been through these experiences and this
4:59 is why Harvest island is self-published
5:02 is to protect me from damages caused by
5:05 bad Publishers and to protect the gamers
5:07 when a publisher tries to take advantage
