0:02 in our ongoing series looking at how to
0:04 find Jesus in the Old Testament we're
0:06 usually looking at pictures and types of
0:09 Christ but today it's it's a little bit
0:10 different today's a little different
0:12 we'll get back onto pictures next time
0:13 but today we're gonna look at Jesus in
0:15 the Old Testament in a more literal way
0:22 like Jesus in the Old Testament so we're
0:23 talking about like a Christ Stephanie or
0:25 a theophany that all I will say I'm
0:28 gonna suggest this I have reasons to
0:31 think is Christ in the Old Testament a
0:33 pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus and if
0:34 you have questions about how that could
0:38 be that would be last week's video or
0:39 last last times message and I'll put a
0:41 link in the video description on that
0:43 for anybody who needs it some of these
0:45 passages are more clear than others and
0:46 I'm gonna kind of showcase that tonight
0:48 as we go through different passages I'll
0:49 be like this one seems pretty clearly
0:51 this is a theophany God definitely
0:55 appears here I'm not sure we have some
0:57 clues but could go either way so I I
0:59 just want us to learn the ability to
1:01 evaluate the text and not overstate our
1:04 position and kind of have like sort of a
1:07 conservative approach to how we get our
1:10 theology and we don't have to agree on
1:11 this and if you guys disagree with me on
1:12 these things and hopefully you've
1:13 learned this by now Sunday night it's
1:16 like I not only am not bothered if you
1:17 disagree with me I'm actually interested
1:20 in hearing why and hearing what your
1:22 opinion is this is a healthy thing that
1:24 we have core issues we hold to and we do
1:25 we do agree on these and then we have a
1:27 lot of other things we can discuss and
1:29 go hmmm I wonder about that and disagree
1:31 and it's a healthy good thing for us so
1:34 John 12 is what we're gonna begin this
1:37 is the first well you're like John 12 is
1:39 Jesus in the Old Testament yes but hold
1:41 on we'll get there John is gonna give us
1:43 Jesus in the Old Testament so we have
1:46 here the best case for Jesus in the Old
1:48 Testament because it's New Testament
1:50 divinely inspired commentary on the Old
1:52 Testament so we know this is what God
1:54 intends for us to get out of the text so
1:57 in John 12 37 it says though he had done
2:00 so many signs before them Jesus had done
2:01 all these signs they still did not
2:04 believe in him so that the word spoken
2:07 by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled
2:09 Lord here's the quote from Isaiah Lord
2:11 who has believed what he heard from us
2:12 and to whom
2:14 has the arm of the Lord been revealed
2:17 therefore they could not believe for
2:19 again Isaiah said he has blinded their
2:22 eyes and hardened their heart lest they
2:24 see with their eyes and understand with
2:26 her heart in turn and I would heal them
2:29 Isaiah said these things because he saw
2:32 his glory and spoke of him okay there's
2:34 there's a lot going on here and and
2:36 because of that we normally would spend
2:38 our time going they couldn't understand
2:40 he blinded them what do we mean by that
2:43 we'll have a whole teaching on how and
2:45 why God hardens hearts so we're gonna
2:48 focus instead on this question whose
2:51 glory did Isaiah see based on the
2:53 commentary of John like who did Isaiah
2:56 see did Isaiah see Jesus because that's
2:59 what's implied with John it's Jesus does
3:01 these miracles and then the word of
3:03 Isaiah is fulfilled who's believed the
3:05 report right because Isaiah saw his
3:08 glory and spoke of him this is this it
3:11 seems clear in John 12 the person Isaiah
3:14 saw is Jesus so let's look at the
3:16 passages of Isaiah that are actually
3:18 quoted the first ones Isaiah 53 verse 1
3:20 and that's all just read it to you who
3:22 has believed what he's heard from us and
3:23 whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed
3:23 revealed
3:25 that's isaiah 53:1 that's really
3:28 interesting because that is probably the
3:30 messianic heart of Isaiah right there
3:32 this is the Isaiah passage that deals
3:34 with the suffering Messiah who will
3:37 suffer in our place for our sins I mean
3:39 this is like a heavy the amazing thing
3:41 about Isaiah 53 is it's like a heavy
3:44 theological statement about the meaning
3:47 and the messenger not only what he would
3:49 do but why he would do it like for our
3:51 sins you know by His stripes we are
3:52 healed all we like sheep have gone
3:55 astray and the Lord has laid upon him
3:57 our iniquities so this is a really deep
3:59 theological statement this is like deep
4:04 New Testament you know teaching about
4:06 how we're saved by Jesus yet here it is
4:09 in Isaiah 53 so that's the first one
4:10 that's quoted but the next one that's
4:13 what we're gonna focus on is isaiah 6:10
4:16 because john quoted two times from
4:17 isaiah once from isaiah 53 and once from
4:19 isaiah 6:10 so here's the isaiah 6:10
4:21 quote make the heart of this people dull
4:23 and their ears heavy and blind their
4:25 eyes lest they see with their eyes and
4:27 with their ears and understand with
4:29 their hearts and turn and be healed
4:34 that's isaiah 6:10 okay so here's the
4:35 pieces of the puzzle we're so far trying
4:39 to figure out isaiah supposedly saw the
4:42 glory of jesus according to john john
4:44 quotes two passages that we could look
4:47 at to go did isaiah see jesus in one of
4:48 these passages well there's the
4:52 suffering Messiah Isaiah 53 passage but
4:53 we don't we don't have anything about
4:56 Isaiah seeing glory or seeing God in
4:58 this passage then there's the Isaiah six
5:00 passage and that's all about Isaiah
5:03 seeing God so when did Isaiah have a
5:04 vision of glory
5:06 well that's Isaiah 6 so we're now gonna
5:09 read Isaiah 6 with this in mind who did
5:10 Isaiah see
5:14 okay Isaiah 6 verse 1 in the year that
5:17 King Uzziah died I saw the Lord
5:19 that would be Yahweh this is he saw
5:23 Yahweh this is God sitting upon a throne
5:25 high and lifted up and the Train of his
5:27 robe filled the temple above him stood
5:30 Seraphim each had six wings with two he
5:32 covered his face and with two he covered
5:34 his feet and with two he flew and one
5:36 called to another and said holy holy
5:38 holy is the Lord of hosts the whole
5:44 earth is full of his glory so we have we
5:45 have two keys here
5:50 Isaiah sees God and sees God's glory
5:53 keep that in mind and in verse 4 and the
5:55 foundations of the thresholds shook at
5:56 the voice of him who called and the
5:58 house was filled with smoke and I said
6:00 woe is me for I am lost for I am a man
6:02 of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst
6:06 of a people of unclean lips for quote my
6:09 eyes have seen the king the Lord of
6:12 Hosts Yahweh of hosts he's seen God then
6:14 one of the Seraphim flew to me having in
6:17 his hand in his hand a burning coal that
6:18 he had taken with tongs from the altar
6:22 and he touched my mouth and so an altar
6:24 is where sacrifices take place and so
6:26 the the burning coals in my view would
6:28 be this is where the drippings of the
6:30 sacrifice come down onto the coals and
6:32 the coals are burning the sacrifice so
6:33 they're connected to the sacrifice and
6:36 then he's touched and you're gonna be
6:37 okay because this coal has touched your
6:39 lips what's interesting is
6:42 he's having a vision of God in heaven
6:45 but the sacrifices took place on earth
6:47 right there's only one sacrifice said to
6:50 have been offered in heaven and that was
6:51 Jesus and the New Testament tells us he
6:52 went into the Holy of Holies and offered
6:55 himself once for all just kind of a cool
6:56 little thing that we see in the text
6:58 there when you tie all the scriptures together
6:59 together
7:01 so he's touch with the coals with the
7:03 coal and he's gonna be okay and verse 7
7:06 and he touched my mouth and said Behold
7:07 this has touched your lips your guilt is
7:11 taken away and your sin atoned for and I
7:12 heard the voice of the Lord saying whom
7:14 shall I send and who will go for us then
7:17 I said Here I am sin me and he said go
7:19 and say to this people keep on hearing
7:21 but do not understand keep on seeing but
7:22 do not perceive and here's the quote in
7:25 John make the heart of this people dull
7:28 and their ears heavy and blind their
7:29 eyes lest they see with their eyes and
7:31 hear with their ears and understand with
7:33 their hearts and turn and be healed so
7:34 there's no other place in the Book of
7:35 Isaiah that's like this there's no other
7:38 time in the 66 chapters of Isaiah where
7:40 as Isaiah sees visually sees God sees
7:43 Yahweh and he sees his glory the crazy
7:46 thing is in the if you were asked this
7:47 question who did Isaiah see you'd be
7:50 like Yahweh right he saw god but john
7:52 interprets this passage and says Isaiah
7:57 saw Jesus I'm saying that Isaiah 6 is
8:02 Jesus in the Old Testament because if
8:03 you as a Christian think well if it's
8:06 Yahweh it's not Jesus then you don't
8:11 understand theology Jesus is Yahweh
8:13 that's that's the biblical teaching on
8:14 this and this is what we're getting out
8:17 of John so who did I J Isaiah see he saw
8:19 Jesus he saw Yahweh so this I think
8:21 could be called a Christ Stephanie and
8:23 he comes in glory and this is not some
8:25 humble manifestation I mean that was the
8:26 cross that was this was in his
8:29 incarnation Christ came humbly here he's
8:30 just revealing God's revealing himself
8:32 to us it's not coming in a bodily form
8:35 in a actual human body that's like a
8:37 real birth steaming body that will die
8:39 that's got all of the connection to Adam
8:41 and genealogy and stuff no no it's it's
8:44 something else sometimes I think we
8:46 might make it hard to identify Jesus in
8:47 the Old Testament because we kind of
8:50 artificially separate Jesus from Yahweh
8:51 and our heads and because we're just
8:52 struggling to under
8:54 in the Trinity which is I understand
8:56 that I understand the struggle to
8:58 understand the concepts in the doctrine
9:00 of the Trinity but there's no reason to
9:02 separate Jesus from Yahweh in fact the
9:03 Bible does quite the opposite
9:06 quite the opposite so let's look now at
9:08 Genesis chapter 3 here's a different one
9:10 we're gonna survey several of these
9:12 today these theophany type passages
9:16 Genesis chapter 3 in Genesis 3 with
9:18 what's already happened is Adam and Eve
9:19 have been created there in the Garden
9:21 Eve and Adam Eve in particular was
9:24 tempted deceived Adam tempted as well
9:26 but chose willingly the ate of the fruit
9:29 and now in Genesis 3 verse 8 we pick up
9:32 the story and it says and they heard the
9:34 sound of the Lord God walking in the
9:36 garden in the cool of the day and the
9:38 man and his wife hid themselves from the
9:40 presence of the Lord God among the trees
9:43 of the garden but the Lord God called to
9:45 the man and said to him where are you
9:48 and he said I heard the sound of you in
9:50 the garden and I was afraid because of
9:52 it because I was naked and I hid myself
9:54 and then they continued to have a
9:55 conversation you know how did you know
9:57 did you eat up the fruit and all this
10:00 and the curse happens and everything
10:03 there's three things that to me in this
10:05 passage indicate this is more than just
10:07 an anthropomorphism anthropomorphism is
10:09 like saying God's hand is outstretched
10:13 to you like I'm not literally thinking
10:15 there's this hand that's stretched out
10:17 to me there's a scripture that says that
10:19 heaven is his foot or earth is his
10:20 footstool heavens is throne I don't
10:22 actually think I was resting his feet
10:23 upon the earth this is picturesque
10:26 language there's there's the one the
10:27 heat the universe is the span is he
10:29 spans the universe with his hands spans
10:30 the heaven with his hands like are we
10:32 saying that his hand is exactly you know
10:34 how billions this many billions of
10:35 light-years across like is that what
10:37 we're saying no we're not if this is
10:38 obviously picturesque language
10:41 anthropomorphism were we're using human
10:43 terms to discuss God that's that's right
10:46 but but this story in Genesis 3 has
10:47 characteristics that tells us it really
10:49 can't be that it can't be just
10:51 picturesque language let me give you
10:53 three reasons one it says that God was
10:54 walking in the garden in the cool of the
10:56 day right they heard the sound of the
10:58 Lord God walking in the garden in the
11:00 cool of the day this is just too
11:04 descriptive to merely be they heard this
11:05 that they you know
11:07 the Lord God came to them that would be
11:09 could be anything right but but this is
11:11 he's walking that's the first reason the
11:13 description is too detailed he's said to
11:16 be walking in the garden in the cool of
11:19 the day the second thing is this Adam
11:20 heard it that's what we get right in
11:23 verse 8 and again in verse 10 they heard
11:26 the sound and then Adam says I heard the
11:28 sound of you in the garden so we're
11:30 saying that that the thing that God was
11:32 doing traveling in the garden somehow it
11:34 was making an audible noise that they
11:37 heard so he had a localized presence of
11:39 some kind he was doing an activity that
11:42 was similar to walking he was heard this
11:44 this is more and then Adam what does he
11:50 do he hides he hides ok so this means
11:51 that God again it was a there was some
11:54 sort of localized presence of God and he
11:56 came in a form that was walking made
11:59 noise Adam hides to avoid him this is
12:00 obviously more than anthropomorphism
12:02 something more is going on here at least
12:04 that's my opinion my conclusion is this
12:07 God was somehow present in something
12:09 like a physical human type of form or
12:12 something that could walk I would say
12:13 this is a theophany
12:15 we can we can probably agree this is a
12:17 theophany here now I would be inclined
12:19 to say it's a cry Stephanie for reasons
12:20 I actually shared last time but
12:22 basically Jesus says this no one's ever
12:26 seen the father but but I've been
12:28 revealing him and the phrases it's John
12:30 1:18 but the phrasing of it is really
12:34 interesting because it's it could easily
12:36 be applied to Jesus on the earth but it
12:38 could also be applied to past tense that
12:40 this is how God's being has been
12:43 revealed and this explains the issue of
12:45 how could no one see God yet these
12:47 people who say oh I've seen God I'm
12:49 gonna die well Jesus is the answer I
12:52 think to that question so let's look at
12:54 another one so I can't answer all the
12:56 questions on these but I think are
12:58 interesting and I think that a non
12:59 theophany definite you know
13:01 interpretation doesn't exactly work with
13:02 the text
13:05 alright so Genesis 18 this has a really
13:07 interesting theophany lot more details
13:10 in this one so a lot more details and it
13:12 starts to get I remember the first time
13:13 I studied this on my own I was like oh
13:16 wait oh it was like I felt like Sherlock
13:18 Holmes you know that except like the
13:19 Bible version
13:21 is train or you're like putting the
13:24 pieces together and going this is this
13:27 is really really interesting and neat at
13:28 some point in your Christian life you
13:30 found maybe maybe right away but you
13:34 found that the Bible is as good as
13:35 you're allowed as you're gonna allow it
13:37 to be like as much as you'll put into it
13:39 and study it and dig into it it'll all
13:41 be there so Genesis 18 verse 1 it says
13:43 and the Lord appeared to him
13:45 this is Yahweh right Yahweh appears and
13:47 the him is Abraham that's the context
13:50 the Lord appeared to him remember this
13:52 because I'll mention this later who is
13:55 it that appeared to Abraham yeah Yahweh
13:58 right God appears to Abraham but look at
14:00 how it describes the appearance so he
14:02 appears to Abraham and he even know
14:05 we're by the Oaks of Mamre as he sat at
14:06 the door of his tent in the heat of the
14:09 day he lifted up his eyes and looked and
14:12 behold three men were standing in front
14:15 of him already it's very interesting
14:18 right Yahweh appears Abraham looks at
14:20 what does he see does it say Yahweh no
14:22 he's three men are standing in front of
14:24 him now I'm gonna say this one of these
14:27 men is Yahweh and the other two are
14:28 angels and they're not Yahweh I don't
14:30 think this is the Trinity this isn't
14:31 father son spirit that would fit really
14:33 well with Mormon theology because they
14:34 see all of them as having physical
14:37 bodies but that's not what today's about
14:40 so that that's not what's happening here
14:41 two of these are angels one is Yahweh
14:43 and all and that will become clear as we
14:45 keep reading the passage but let me just
14:47 say this the word man you might be
14:48 stumbled by that well how can you use
14:50 the word man to describe God or even
14:52 angels for that matter but that's
14:55 exactly what the scripture does you ever
14:56 read the verse that says that God is a
15:00 man of war it doesn't mean he's his
15:04 nature is human in that sense no it it's
15:06 man is used of humans it's used of
15:08 angels it's used of the angel of the
15:10 Lord which we've went in to last time so
15:12 it's a very flexible term it doesn't
15:16 just mean not God a humanoid type person
15:19 now notice the numbers as we keep
15:22 reading here picking up partway through
15:25 verse 2 notice the numbers you know
15:27 whether he says them or him
15:30 they plural or him singular so it says
15:32 when he saw them that's a
15:35 right so you saw three three men he ran
15:37 from the tent door to meet them plural
15:40 and bowed himself to the earth and said
15:45 O Lord singular if I have found favor in
15:48 your sight singular your sight that's
15:49 that word check the Hebrew that's
15:52 singular do not pass by your servant
15:55 your singular servant so there's three
15:57 men here but he runs to them any
15:59 addresses one of them as his Lord and
16:02 says that he's that person's servant so
16:03 we see that one of them is highlighted
16:06 amongst the three as being special verse
16:08 four little little water be brought and
16:11 wash your feet that's plural and rest
16:13 yourselves plural under the tree while I
16:15 bring a morsel of bread that you may
16:17 refresh yourselves plural and after that
16:19 you may pass on since you've come to
16:23 your servant so we've got this singular
16:26 being isolated out of the three but he's
16:28 gonna do something for that all three of
16:30 them bringing them stuff ones addressed
16:31 his Lord and that's the real focus of
16:34 Abraham so to recap Abraham sees Yahweh
16:36 he looks up and sees three men he runs
16:38 over to the three but he addresses one
16:41 of them as Lord implication one of these
16:44 is Yahweh that's so far that's just what
16:46 the text would imply it seems as though
16:48 they're all in some kind of human-like
16:50 form for one thing they're visible and
16:52 for another he offers them food and
16:56 water to wash their feet that obviously
16:57 is not an anthropomorphism here it was
16:59 like he's like I'll give you a food and
17:00 water to wash your feet
17:02 so they seemed to be in human form or at
17:04 least human looking form and we have
17:05 good reason to think that they're more
17:07 than human not only in this chapter but
17:09 in the following chapters so we're not
17:10 saying they're reduced to humanity but
17:11 they're coming in that in that
17:14 appearance so it's unlike the
17:16 Incarnation because he actually came and
17:18 was a human this is in a different sense
17:22 so let's keep reading because now we see
17:23 them talk and I think it's very insightful
17:24 insightful
17:29 so they said plural they they speak as a
17:29 group here
17:32 do as you have said verse 6 and Abraham
17:35 went quickly into the tent to Sara and
17:38 said quick three seas of fine flour
17:40 knead it and make cakes I remember
17:41 reading this so I was studying for this
17:43 and Allison was was near by and I looked
17:45 at her and I said I think this is really
17:46 funny baby cuz
17:47 Abraham's like stay here and I'll make
17:49 you food and he runs to his wife he's
17:53 like quick mixing food and I that's yeah
17:56 that's pretty much that's how it is for
17:58 lots of families I think that was funny
18:00 but he's not done because he's gonna
18:01 have someone else make food too so verse
18:03 seven and Abraham ran to the herd and
18:05 took a calf tender and good and gave it
18:07 to a young man who prepared it quickly
18:09 then he took curds and milk and the calf
18:11 that he had prepared and set it before
18:14 them and he stood by them under the tree
18:17 while they ate so then they all get the
18:19 food and they're all eating or at least
18:20 the word they is there so I'm assuming
18:21 they're all eating they said to him
18:24 where is Sara your wife and he said
18:27 she's in the tent so this could be I
18:29 mean just interesting right this could
18:30 be that they're speaking like plural
18:32 they're all sort of talking together it
18:34 was one old Hollywood movie where they
18:36 they actually took this scene and they
18:41 had three men and each of the three men
18:43 they were all hooded and one would start
18:44 a sentence and the other one would
18:45 finish it and they had the same actors
18:47 face on the different guys I don't think
18:49 that's probably a fair representation of
18:50 it because it seems as though one of
18:52 them stands out as different than the
18:53 rest based on what he what we already
18:56 read so again not that not the Trinity
18:57 Father Son Spirit here but there's
18:59 definitely a theophany
19:03 all right verse 10 now it changes now
19:05 Yahweh speaks it's not they anymore it's
19:07 just Yahweh the Lord said I will surely
19:09 return to you about this time next year
19:13 and Sarah your wife shall have a son so
19:16 now Yahweh speaks to him first it was
19:18 they now it's just just Yahweh what was
19:20 interesting is they go they say where's
19:22 your wife and then Yahweh says I will
19:23 surely return to you
19:25 Sarah's listening at the tent or behind
19:29 him now something you should know the
19:31 word Lord the word Yahweh you probably
19:32 says that in your translation I'm not
19:33 sure which translation you're using that
19:36 is added by the translators it doesn't
19:39 say Yahweh in that verse in the actual
19:41 Hebrew in verse 10 it was added what it
19:44 says in the Hebrew is the one or one so
19:47 one said to him or the one said to him
19:48 that's what it says but it was added for
19:50 good reason because as we keep reading
19:52 we'll finally we get to verse 14 that
19:54 the one who says this is obviously
19:56 Yahweh so just keep that in mind I just
19:56 want to give you all the all the
19:58 information so you can study the Bible
20:05 verse 11 now Abraham and Sarah were old
20:08 advanced in years the way of women had
20:09 ceased to be with Sarah so she couldn't
20:11 have a child she already passed that
20:13 stage of life so Sarah laughed to
20:16 herself saying after I'm worn out and my
20:18 lord is old shall I have pleasure like
20:19 if she can have a child which would be
20:22 that would be the pleasure to her the
20:24 Lord said to Abraham now now in verse 13
20:27 this is Yahweh Yahweh is actually now
20:29 definitely clearly speaking says to
20:30 Abraham why did Sarah laugh and say
20:32 shall I indeed bear a child now that I'm
20:36 old is anything too hard for Yahweh the
20:37 Lord and it's interesting when God
20:40 speaks of himself with that kind of
20:42 distance that's there at the appointed
20:44 time I will return to you about this
20:46 time next year and Sarah shall have a son
20:46 son
20:48 and it's that phrase that tells us that
20:51 verse 10 is also Yahweh speaking because
20:53 he said I'll return to you and then he
20:55 goes and he affirms it now the AH way
20:58 speaks I will return to you so that's
21:00 why we think verse 10 is seems like it's
21:02 definitely speaking of Yahweh here
21:05 Yahweh speaks about himself in the third
21:08 person and in the first I will and
21:11 Yahweh is anything too hard for Yahweh
21:13 and then he was surely I will return to
21:15 you it's just interesting it's
21:16 interesting I wouldn't I wouldn't build
21:18 a giant castle out of that idea I just
21:20 think it's really neat you know I like
21:22 observing these things alright let's
21:23 keep reading but Sarah denied it saying
21:26 I did not laugh for she was afraid he
21:31 said no but you did laugh if anybody
21:33 thinks the three men were there but
21:34 Yahweh was speaking to Abraham
21:36 internally like there was like an
21:38 internal voice kind of thing well that
21:41 couldn't be true because what Sarah
21:42 overheard it and laughed okay so this is
21:44 there's an audible communication going
21:45 on there he's are all hearing it
21:50 together verse 16 then the men set out
21:51 from there and they looked down towards
21:53 Sodom and you guys know what's happening
21:54 next they're gonna go down to Sodom and
21:56 the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is
21:58 gonna happen and Abraham went with them
21:59 to see them on there to set them on
22:02 their way and the Lord said Yahweh said
22:04 shall I hide from Abraham what I'm about
22:05 to do
22:07 seeing that Abraham shall surely become
22:09 a great a mighty nation and all the
22:11 nations of the earth shall be blessed in
22:13 him for I've chosen him that he may
22:14 command his children and his household
22:17 after him to keep the way of the Lord
22:19 Yahweh to keep the way of the Lord by
22:21 doing righteousness and justice so that
22:24 the Lord Yahweh may bring to Abraham
22:26 what he had promised him I look forward
22:27 to one day when we'll just have
22:28 translations that actually just
22:30 translate the Hebrew instead of putting
22:32 the word Lord they're like why not I
22:34 can't think of a good reason except that
22:35 it's harder to sell them because people
22:36 are like freaked out like what's that
22:38 and they they just need to be educated
22:41 on then they probably would love it but
22:43 it helps us to see that and recognize
22:46 what's happening there so who's speaking
22:48 Yahweh and then at the end he suddenly
22:50 speaks in the third person that to keep
22:52 the way of Yahweh by doing righteousness
22:54 and justice so that Yahweh may bring to
22:57 Abraham what he has promised him it's
22:59 just it's just interesting I just don't
23:01 find it very interesting verse 20 then
23:03 the Lord said because the outcry against
23:04 Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their
23:07 sin is very grave I will go down to see
23:08 whether they have done altogether
23:10 according to the outcry that has come to
23:13 me and if not I will know so the men
23:15 turned from there and went towards Sodom
23:19 but Abraham stood still before Yahweh
23:22 okay this is this is interesting this is
23:23 where something interesting happens
23:26 because when you read on you go to 19
23:30 just two of them go down to see lot just
23:33 two of them Abraham now stands before
23:37 Yahweh and two of them go down so Yahweh
23:38 was definitely one of the three this is
23:41 confirmation one of these three in so
23:43 this is definitely theophany there seems
23:45 to be no reasonable way to doubt that
23:49 verse 23 then abraham drew near and said
23:52 will you indeed sweep away the righteous
23:54 with the wicked and then they they have
23:56 this whole like conversation where he's
23:57 like what if there was fifty righteous
23:59 or ten righteous and they kind of kind
24:02 of Barger's it down and he's interceding
24:03 for Sodom and then at the end of the
24:06 chapter verse 32 the last part of verse
24:08 32 he says for the sake of ten I will
24:10 not destroy it and the Lord went his way
24:13 when he had finished speaking to Abraham
24:14 and Abraham returned to his place and
24:17 again in Genesis 19 we'll read the first
24:18 couple verses there just to give us the
24:22 context the two angels came to Sodom in
24:26 the evening so these men were angels but
24:27 the third of them
24:28 yah way that that's what seems to be
24:34 very very clear then in Genesis 1924
24:37 adding another interesting thing into
24:39 the text it has this think of the
24:41 grammar of this right he says then
24:43 Yahweh rained on Sodom and Gomorrah
24:46 sulfur and fire from Yahweh out of
24:51 heaven that's interesting isn't it
24:54 Yahweh rained down sulfur and fire from
24:57 Yahweh out of heaven and we read in the
24:59 earlier chapter Yahweh had come down and
25:01 was there I mean maybe that that he
25:04 stayed in that theophany state during
25:05 the whole events of what was going on
25:07 with Sodom and gomorrah's the two angels
25:08 went perhaps he was staying there and
25:11 then when he when they left and the fire
25:12 he may be that that that is a
25:16 possibility so I think that is a very
25:19 interesting very interesting passage and
25:21 there's one more I'll add to to this mix
25:24 and that's Amos chapter 4 verse 11 this
25:27 is specifically about the events we just
25:28 read so turn there if you would Amos
25:30 4:11 if you like to I'll just read it to
25:34 you so we have we have is we have
25:36 definitely a theophany type thing but
25:38 here's why I think cry Stephanie because
25:41 this Yahweh who's speaking to Abraham he
25:44 speaks also of Yahweh in the third
25:47 person and then when the events finally
25:49 take place of the fire and brimstone
25:52 Yahweh rains down fire brimstone from
25:53 Yahweh out of heaven almost as though
25:56 we've got two different persons going on
26:01 in the story Amos 4:11 Amos 4:11 says I
26:04 overthrew some of you as when God
26:06 overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah as you were
26:09 and you were as a brand plucked out of
26:12 the burning yet you did not return to me
26:16 declares the Lord Yahweh here's another
26:18 statement about the sodom and gomorrah
26:20 event where god again he always seems to
26:23 distance himself from himself you know
26:26 as far as phraseology i'll read it again
26:28 i god speaking i over through some of
26:31 you as when God overthrew Sodom and
26:34 Gomorrah and you were as a brand plucked
26:35 out of the burning yet you did not
26:39 return to me declares Yahweh very interesting
26:40 interesting
26:43 how multiple different passages kind of
26:44 preserve the same thing it's isn't in
26:46 other words it doesn't seem coincidental
26:47 it seems intentional when you have it
26:49 happening multiple times even in a
26:52 different book of the Bible okay so turn
26:54 to Genesis 32 and we're gonna look at
26:56 Jacob Jacob the night before meeting
27:00 Esau this is the passage where Jacob's
27:02 wrestling with the man and there's this
27:05 difficult stuff going on so Genesis 32
27:09 verse 24 Jacob just to bring you up to
27:12 speed he he's gonna send all of his his
27:15 Goods and his cattle and his servants
27:16 and even his family are gonna go ahead
27:18 of him and he's offering them to Esau
27:20 you can have all this stuff he's just
27:21 trying to build a bridge because the
27:24 last time he saw Esau try saying that
27:25 five times fast
27:28 he saw Esau the last time that happened
27:31 Esau was gonna try to kill him and so he
27:33 thinks this is still gonna happen so
27:35 Genesis 32 24 it says and Jacob was left
27:39 alone and a man wrestled with him until
27:42 the breaking of the day when the man saw
27:45 that he did not prevail against Jacob he
27:47 touched his hip socket and Jacobs hip
27:49 was put out of joint as he wrestled with
27:52 him then he said let me go for the day
27:55 is broken but Jacob said I will not let
27:58 you go unless you bless me and he said
28:01 to him what is your name and he said
28:03 Jacob then he said your name shall no
28:05 longer be called Jacob but Israel for
28:08 you have striven with God and with men
28:11 and have prevailed then Jacob asked him
28:13 please tell me your name but he said why
28:16 is it that you ask my name and there he
28:18 blessed him so Jacob called the name of
28:23 the place Peniel which which means to
28:26 see God and so he says for I have seen
28:30 God face to face yet my life has been
28:35 delivered so who did Jacob think he saw
28:39 God he thought he saw God yet he
28:42 wrestled with this man and when the
28:44 person he's wrestling with describes the
28:46 event he says you've wrestled with man
28:49 and with God and if you're thinking well
28:51 wrestled with man so he that was a man
28:53 and so symbolically he was wrestling
28:54 with God but the
28:56 man wasn't really somehow a theophany i
28:57 think i think that's mistaken because
29:00 the man Jacob wrestled with is at the
29:01 beginning of Jacob's life anybody know
29:05 who that was that was Esau remember that
29:08 they're in the womb and he grabs him
29:10 he's named he'll catcher because of
29:12 grabbing him that was the first one he
29:13 wrestled with and then he defeated he
29:15 saw he he got the birthright and he got
29:18 the blessing and he goes and now you've
29:19 wrestled with God he wrestled with man
29:21 and you wrestled with God and prevailed
29:23 the thing with God is he couldn't
29:25 actually beat God he just wouldn't let
29:27 go and I think that's really interesting
29:30 I can't defeat God but I know let go I
29:32 think that's a nice attitude to have so
29:33 the two points I would draw from this
29:36 passage are one he says I've seen God
29:38 face to face yet my life is delivered
29:40 and this is interesting again because
29:42 the problem is if you see God you die
29:43 that seems to be the consistent teaching
29:45 you see God you die yet how are people
29:47 seeing God not dying well yet we see
29:50 Jesus he becomes the safe way for us to
29:53 see God he's always been the solution
29:56 and then number two the second point is
29:58 he striven with God and men and of
30:00 course the the man was he saw that and
30:04 God was of course this event so Hosea 12
30:05 verses 3 and 4 supports this let me read
30:08 it to you it says in the womb he took
30:10 his brother by the heel and in his
30:14 manhood he strove with God you see when
30:15 he was a baby he struggled with his
30:17 brother when he was an adult he strove
30:19 he's struggled with God he strove with
30:21 the angel and prevailed he wept and
30:24 sought his favour he met God at Bethel
30:27 and there God spoke with us
30:30 that's Hosea 12 verses 3 and 4 it seems
30:31 to really reinforce the idea that this
30:35 is he's wrestling with God now if you
30:38 were a Jewish person who rejected the
30:40 Messiah or as it projects Jesus I think
30:42 you'd have a struggle your own struggle
30:44 with God trying to explain this passage
30:47 but I think that when you realize that
30:50 Jesus is the image of the invisible God
30:53 that he is you know he's going forth our
30:56 from everlasting that he is he is being
30:58 revealed throughout the scriptures it
31:00 just makes total sense
31:02 it just makes total sense Jesus has
31:05 always been the answer to so many of the
31:08 hanging questions of the Old Testament
31:10 so that's what I love about getting
31:11 these going to the Old Testament finding
31:13 these these difficult places and hard
31:14 passages because so often it's pointing
31:17 right to Christ alright let's let's do
31:20 another Joshua chapter 5 this is when
31:21 they're entering the promised land some
31:23 of you guys were asking about this last
31:25 time they're entering the promised land
31:28 they're just crossing over the the River
31:30 Jordan and the first city they come to
31:34 is what Jericho yes they come to Jericho
31:36 so we're there in John and Joshua five
31:39 entering the promised land and remember
31:42 when God had said we went over this last
31:44 time as well I will send my angel before
31:46 you you better do what he says and it
31:47 was the angel of the Lord that would go
31:50 before them well let's read on Joshua
31:52 5:13 when Joshua is by Jericho he lifted
31:55 up his eyes and looked and behold a man
31:58 was standing before him with his sword
32:01 with his drawn sword in his hand and
32:03 Joshua went to him and said are you for
32:07 us or for our adversaries now this is
32:09 understandable right because Joshua is
32:10 coming with not only the people of
32:12 Israel but he's now coming with the army
32:14 of Israel and why are they in the
32:17 Promised Land they've come to drive
32:19 people out and to take over the land
32:21 this is this is it and so we see someone
32:23 come with a sword and he's like alright
32:25 this might be the first encounter you
32:27 know this might be like are you for us
32:30 or against us and I love the answer in
32:37 verse 14 and he said no I love it I love
32:39 it you know so many people they put
32:40 crosses on their shields or they've been
32:42 the name of God they have I'll tell you
32:44 right now if there's a war in the world
32:48 there's a chaplain blessing each side
32:49 right different chaplains coming up and
32:52 blessing the troops of each side as if
32:54 everyone's causes just as if God's on
32:56 everybody's side and I like this answer
32:58 here he just says no no this doesn't
33:00 mean that every war is unjust either it
33:02 just means no God has his own agendas
33:04 and he doesn't necessarily come in line
33:06 with yours you need to come in line with
33:08 his unit you need to follow him so he
33:11 says no but I am the commander of the
33:14 army of the Lord now I have come as
33:17 though he was expected I'm here now I've
33:20 come and Joshua
33:21 fell on his face that was
33:24 hurt no obviously this is this is a
33:26 picture language he boughs down he gets
33:30 on his face and worshiped and worshiped
33:33 and said to him what does my Lord say to
33:35 his servant so he just completely yields
33:37 and how does he know so quickly to yield
33:39 because he says I'm the commander of the
33:42 army of the Lord he's Yahweh's army
33:43 commander I'm in a bow before you and he
33:46 worships and then what is what does he
33:47 say the commander of the lord's army
33:49 said to Josh would take off your sandals
33:50 from your feet for the place where
33:51 you're standing is a holy does that
33:54 sound familiar to you under the last
33:58 time that happened yeah it was it was at
34:01 the burning bush with this interesting
34:02 right in the burning bush that was the
34:04 angel of the Lord in the bush but Yahweh
34:07 spoke from the bush and Moses comes near
34:08 and he's told to take his sandals off
34:12 and now we have now not Moses Joshua the
34:13 new generation he meets the angel of the
34:15 Lord he baozi worships and he's told
34:16 take your sandals off this is holy
34:20 ground the commander of the lord's army
34:23 it says the commander of the lord's army
34:26 the lord's army here would would
34:27 potentially be the Israelites or it
34:31 could also be speaking of angels the
34:32 Israelites are actually called the army
34:34 of God in other places in Scripture so
34:35 it could be talking about them he's like
34:37 Joshua you think you're in charge I'm in
34:39 charge that may have been the point but
34:41 here's a couple points one Joshua
34:45 worshipped this guy a lot of people will
34:47 try to get away from seeing if the often
34:49 here or a Christ often a year and
34:50 they'll say it's it's okay to worship
34:52 God's messengers because the messenger
34:55 represents God but that's not true is it
34:57 because in Scripture this is
35:00 specifically refuted multiple times we
35:02 have human messengers that are that
35:03 people try to worship right Peter says
35:05 get up we're just men like you stop that
35:09 right don't worship us stop that so then
35:11 we also have in revelation 19:10 an
35:14 angelic messenger and john falls to
35:16 worship this angelic messenger and he
35:17 doesn't go it's okay because I represent
35:21 Yahweh no it says then I felt revelation
35:22 19:10 then I fell down at his feet to
35:25 worship Him but he said to me you must
35:28 not do that I'm a fellow servant with
35:29 you and your brothers who hold the
35:32 testimony of Jesus worship God for the
35:33 testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy
35:34 prophecy
35:36 so he's told don't
35:37 this you can't do this so I think it's
35:41 it's um wrong to say that the worship is
35:43 insignificant here this being Comes
35:45 represents not only the Lord he's
35:46 commanded Lord says but he's receiving
35:49 worship and he says similar to what was
35:52 said to Moses take off your your shoes
35:55 because in fact that's the response he
35:58 goes to worship and they ain't this this
36:01 individual this the the commander of the
36:04 armies of the Lord of Hosts he says to
36:06 him instead of get up stop worshiping he
36:07 goes yeah while you're at it take your
36:09 shoes off because this is holy ground I
36:11 mean he just he in other words
36:13 incentivizes him even more to do it
36:20 question why is the ground holy how come
36:22 when angels come in the Bible we don't
36:23 have them telling people to take their
36:26 shoes off the only example I have is
36:31 when God shows up because God's holy
36:35 interesting Exodus 3 5 last time this
36:37 happened it says do not come near here
36:38 take your sandals off your feet for the
36:40 place on which you are standing is holy
36:43 ground why because God's presence was
36:47 there now as you continue reading in
36:51 Joshua chapter 5 if there's I think an
36:53 unnecessary chapter break if you read on
36:55 to chapter 6 it there's a chapter break
36:56 there and so you feel like it's ending
36:57 the story but remember what just
36:59 happened was like an introduction it
37:00 wasn't the whole story right I see this
37:02 guy I bowed on our worship he says take
37:04 your sandals off and he introduced
37:06 himself as who the commander of the army
37:08 of the Lord and guess what he has
37:11 commands so that's what we read in
37:15 Joshua 6 chapter 1 now Jericho was shut
37:16 up inside and outside because of the
37:19 people of Israel none went out and none
37:23 came in and the Lord said to Joshua now
37:25 if that had been apart from the story of
37:27 the commander then I would not I would
37:28 have just assumed God which is somehow
37:30 speaking to him but because it happens
37:33 right as Joshua is meeting this guy
37:36 bowing down and then getting he's gonna
37:37 get instructions that's the idea I've
37:40 come to tell you what to do and the Lord
37:42 Yahweh said to Joshua see I've given
37:44 Jericho into your hand with its king and
37:46 mighty men of valor you shall march
37:48 around the city all the metaphor going
37:49 around the city once
37:51 thus you shall do for six days and he
37:52 continues to give them all the
37:56 instructions in the context I think
37:58 Yahweh is the same as the commander of
38:01 the army of Yahweh and here's why
38:05 because in verse 13 it's introduced by
38:07 Joshua was by Jericho he's on his way to
38:09 Jericho he's almost there
38:11 and in chapter 6 verse 1 where is he
38:12 he's still there right in front of
38:14 Jericho getting instructions on what to
38:17 do he's about to command that means that
38:18 he's there to command them and then in
38:20 chapter 6 that's where the commands come
38:22 so who's speaking here it seems to me
38:24 that it's Yahweh who's speaking in
38:25 Yahweh who was standing before and
38:28 Joshua submits and he asks the commander
38:30 for instructions what does my Lord say
38:31 to his servant remember he said that at
38:34 the end of chapter 5 what does my Lord
38:36 say to his servant and the next person
38:39 to speak in the story is and Yahweh said
38:42 to Joshua go do this so I think we have
38:43 a good reason to think that that's the
38:46 case and let's not forget again Exodus
38:49 23 where God says to his people behold I
38:52 send an angel before you to guard you on
38:53 the way and to bring you to the place
38:55 that I have prepared that's the promised
38:56 land that's what they're doing right now
38:58 pay careful attention to him and obey
39:00 his voice do not rebel against him for
39:02 he will not pardon your transgression
39:06 for my name is in him so these are it to
39:08 me these are lots of threads all coming
39:09 together and the thing that makes the
39:18 so you might go Mike okay finder the
39:19 same but why is this stuff so
39:22 complicated and because sometimes it is
39:23 some of this stuff is complicated or
39:24 weaving multiple threads from different
39:26 books of the Bible altogether and I
39:27 think that there's something that we
39:29 want we should learn called explanatory
39:31 scope I guess raise your head feel for
39:34 that term explanatory scope so there's a
39:36 explanatory power that's how well an
39:39 explanation solves a problem explanatory
39:41 scope is basically how many problems it
39:44 solves like how many problems it solves
39:47 that's that's the explanatory scope so
39:49 like if you came in this room is a total
39:50 mess and it's got all these weird
39:52 decorations up as it does now because we
39:54 have our Vacation Bible School come in
39:56 and what if I was to give you an
39:58 explanation for for this right here I
40:00 and the explanation was well Kirk was
40:02 here earlier and he really likes seashells
40:02 seashells
40:05 and and and ocean themes and so I think
40:07 he decorated this area and then I go and
40:08 there's a shark hanging from the ceiling
40:10 over there and that's because Ric really
40:12 likes you know sea creatures and he
40:14 likes scuba diving and he likes sharks
40:16 so he put the shark and I start giving
40:18 you different explanations for every
40:20 piece of artwork that's up in the room
40:23 after a while you'd be like maybe all
40:24 those explanations work they have
40:26 explanatory power but they don't have
40:28 explanatory scope then I give you the
40:31 one that has scope and I go VBS right we
40:33 have Vacation Bible School one
40:35 explanation that explains all of these
40:36 issues all at the same time that's
40:38 explanatory scope so you see how that's
40:40 really important when you have a bunch
40:42 of issues then you have one solution
40:43 that fixes all those problems you go
40:46 okay there's a lot of truth to that then
40:48 Jesus has explanatory scope
40:51 he explains so many of the problems that
40:53 we see and issues we see throughout the
40:55 Old Testament it's as though the Old
40:57 Testament asks the questions and Jesus
40:59 provides the answer it's it's laying the
41:02 trail and we're here like CSI gathering
41:03 the data getting it all together and
41:05 going yes okay this is Jesus this is
41:09 what we're seeing its Christ its Christ
41:11 they do this with the with the planets
41:12 and the movements of the stars and they
41:13 try to come up with all these different
41:16 theories for how the why is the
41:18 retrograde motion of planets in the sky
41:20 and star is moving the way they do and
41:21 then finally when they thought well
41:23 maybe it's just gravity like and they
41:25 had one explanation that kind of dealt
41:28 with all of it that was well accepted
41:31 right and it's the same thing here Jesus
41:35 answers so much alright let's look at
41:37 let me see how much how much do I have
41:39 here okay not too much more a little bit
41:40 more we're look at another example this
41:41 is about Shadrach Meshach and Abednego
41:43 and here's a story where I'm gonna tell
41:45 you I don't know for sure but I think
41:47 it's interesting and I think it's worth
41:48 looking at as we look at this
41:52 so Daniel chapter 3 we know the story
41:55 Shadrach Meshach and Abednego they
41:57 they're told that they cannot worship
41:59 you know and they have to worship and
42:01 bow down to Nebuchadnezzar statue they
42:03 can't worship God and so they refused
42:04 and now they're gonna get the death
42:07 penalty so we pick up in verse 19 of
42:09 Daniel 3 then Nebuchadnezzar was filled
42:12 with fury and the expression of his face
42:14 was changed and against Shadrach Meshach
42:15 and Abednego
42:17 ordered the furnace heated seven times
42:20 more than it was usually heated I think
42:21 this is funny because this is sometimes
42:26 what what like big heady leaders do like
42:27 you cuz you know the people who actually
42:29 run the furnace are like you can't
42:31 technically heat it seven times but
42:32 that's what the order goes out he's like
42:33 just make it happen
42:35 seven times whatever you say boss so
42:37 they just throw a bunch of fuel in there
42:38 I doubt they actually heated it seven
42:41 times but whose truth anyway I think
42:43 it's funny some leaders are like that
42:45 I'm so verse 20 and he ordered some of
42:47 the mighty men of his army to bind
42:49 Shadrach Meshach and Abednego and to
42:51 cast them into the burning fiery furnace
42:54 then these men were bound in their
42:56 cloaks their tunics their hats and their
42:58 other garments and they were thrown into
43:00 the burning fiery furnace because the
43:02 Kings order was urgent and the furnace
43:05 was overheated the flame of the fire
43:08 killed those men who took up Shadrach
43:09 Meshach and Abednego
43:11 I mean how horrific this event must have
43:13 been and these three men Shadrach
43:16 Meshach and Abednego fell bound into the
43:21 burning fiery furnace then King
43:22 Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose
43:25 up in haste and he declared to his
43:27 counselors did not we did we not cast
43:30 three men bound into the fire they
43:31 answered and said to the king true O
43:34 king because you don't want to say any
43:35 more words than you have to when he's
43:38 this angry yep Billy whatever you say
43:41 boss and he answered and said but I see
43:46 four men four unbound walking in the
43:48 midst of the fire and they are not hurt
43:50 and the appearance of the fourth is like
43:52 a son of the gods and I'll pause for a
43:53 second here because if you have new king
43:55 James you're like no it says like the
43:57 son of God the more accurate translation
43:59 is a son of the gods I'll explain it in
44:03 a minute but that's just the reality of
44:05 it they the translators felt that this
44:08 was like Christ and so they I think bent
44:10 the translation in at least in the New
44:12 King James Version a little bit without
44:14 justification but verse 26 then
44:16 Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of
44:18 the burning fiery furnace he declared
44:21 Shadrach Meshach and Abednego servants
44:23 of the Most High God come out and come
44:25 here then Shadrach Meshach and Abednego
44:28 came out from the fire so let's look at
44:29 that phrase because
44:31 what we really want to highlight we're
44:32 not looking at the whole story we just
44:33 there's four men instead of three and
44:35 one of them has a different appearance
44:38 than normal people he looks like a quote
44:41 son of the gods like a son of the gods
44:45 now Nebuchadnezzar was he a Christian no
44:48 was he a Jew no right he's a pagan king
44:49 who literally just built a big statue
44:51 and told everyone yep dad to worship Him
44:53 right this is not he's not a godly man
44:55 he has all sorts of weird beliefs in his
44:58 head what what when he describes like a
45:00 son of the gods it doesn't mean it was
45:03 like this is like Hercules right it's
45:05 like Hercules yeah you made it no that's
45:07 not what we're saying
45:09 what we're saying is he sees a being
45:10 that looks like a Divine Being looks
45:13 like a supernatural something more than
45:15 human that's what he sees in the fire
45:16 that's all we really get out of his
45:19 statement like a son of the gods that's
45:21 all we really get out of that so that's
45:22 why he says like I don't know what that
45:24 thing is but in my head and my with my
45:26 pagan worldview this looks like a son of
45:31 the gods so who could this be like whoa
45:32 in the text what information do we have
45:36 like it it could be an angel it's more
45:38 than a man I think that's clear it could
45:39 be an angel or it could be an actual
45:41 theophany could be could be a Christ
45:44 often II and I don't actually have a
45:46 clear way of telling I don't even have a
45:48 strong push towards one way or the other
45:50 in my opinion it could really easily be
45:53 either one so I'm inclined to lean
45:55 towards it being a Christ often II
45:57 personally but that is because of this
45:59 see if I start with the Old Testament I
46:01 just look at this passage I would not
46:04 see a Christ often either but if I take
46:06 the whole Council of God's Word and I
46:08 see Jesus and I see Jesus coming in
46:10 other forms Isaiah saw his glory and I
46:12 see all this kind of stuff then I feel
46:14 like I have good reason to kind of lean
46:16 automatically towards the Christ often
46:18 II because that's just the way God seems
46:21 to be doing things and this is this is
46:22 where I wanna bring out an important
46:26 point when we're doing this Jesus in the
46:27 Old Testament study this is a study in
46:29 theology right this is there's a lot of
46:31 threads there's actually evidence for
46:32 the Bible there's internal consistency
46:34 and things like that there's the idea
46:36 that there's a meta-narrative a big a
46:38 big story that's written in the text of
46:39 Scripture that the authors themselves
46:41 couldn't have designed right God
46:43 designed this there's all that
46:46 but we do this as Christians with the
46:48 knowledge of Christ we're now looking at
46:51 the Old Testament to rediscover what God
46:53 has already placed in it that's the idea
46:55 does that make sense and this because
46:57 I'm doing this with the theology of
46:59 Christ already secured in my mind I'm
47:03 able to allow the New Testament to guide
47:06 me in my understanding of the old to
47:07 allow the fullness of the scriptures to
47:09 guide me and how I interpret it so I
47:12 think this is absolutely fine this is
47:13 not evidence for the Bible from
47:14 fulfilled prophecy that's a very
47:16 different kind of thing this is rather
47:19 just evidence for inspiration but it
47:22 really is um an exercise you can only do
47:24 with Christ already established
47:26 theologically in your head like you
47:27 already have to know who Jesus is to be
47:29 able to do this thing and that's one of
47:30 the one of the principles we'll get it
47:31 when you're going to Jesus in the Old
47:36 Testament I think it's totally safe to
47:40 allow the scriptures to inform us of the
47:42 way in which God communicates about
47:44 Jesus he's the overarching theme of the
47:47 Bible in the Bible itself seems to
47:51 reveal that Jesus is in here a lot more
47:53 than what was obvious to the original
47:57 readers so I have biblical reasons for
48:02 okay there's there's there's other
48:04 passages I'd like to cover but I think
48:06 we're done as far as time goes and what
48:07 I want to do is announce what we're
48:08 doing next weeks or next week we're
48:10 gonna get into Melchizedek and
48:14 Melchizedek is very controversial and
48:15 difficult figured a lot of people think
48:17 he's a Christ often II personally I
48:18 don't think so
48:20 and I'm gonna explain why and if you
48:21 think he is that's fine I'm love to hear
48:23 your thoughts on that as well but I
48:26 think Melchizedek gives us I hope people
48:29 can grab what I'm trying to teach here
48:31 gives us ways of approaching the Old
48:32 Testament so that what we learn from
48:34 milk is that we can apply to other
48:37 passages you see because we're not just
48:39 learning here's Jesus here here's Jesus
48:40 here we're actually learning here's how
48:42 to find Jesus in other places as well
48:44 we're getting a set of tools that we can
48:47 use to uncover evidence for Christ
48:50 throughout the Old Testament right let's
48:53 pray father God
48:56 we pray for wisdom as we approach your
48:58 word for humility we don't want to be
49:01 using our imaginations to find stuff but
49:04 yet in all sorts of ways with with not
49:06 only prophecy and stories and lives and
49:11 names and also with sort of just this
49:13 style of how you've written Christ into
49:15 the Scriptures we just pray for insight
49:17 understanding that we might appreciate
49:19 the fullness of the Word of God we want
49:21 to be like those those guys on the road
49:23 to emmaus having our hearts burn within
49:25 us as you open the scriptures to us to
49:27 teach us the things about yourself that
49:31 we find in these pages in Jesus name [Music]
