0:08 Welcome back to the channel. I am Ana.
0:10 In our previous lesson, we talked about
0:14 eight main uses of been. Now, if you
0:15 haven't watched that lesson, there's a
0:18 link in the description. I want you to
0:20 watch that lesson because it will make
0:22 understanding today's lesson much
0:25 easier. There's also a quiz at the end
0:27 to test your understanding. So, watch
0:29 the lesson until the end. In today's
0:32 lesson, we are going to learn all the
0:36 uses of being. Now, both beam and being
0:39 come from the same verb that is to be.
0:42 We discussed that in the last lesson,
0:44 but they are used in completely
0:46 different ways and different time
0:49 frames. So, before we start, let's
0:50 quickly understand the difference
0:54 between being and being. As I mentioned
0:57 earlier, been and being come from the
1:00 verb to be, but their forms are
1:04 different. Been is the past participle
1:07 of be, while being is the present
1:10 participle of the verb be. Now, in
1:14 simple words, been is used to talk about
1:18 what has happened or been experienced.
1:21 While being is used to talk about what
1:24 is happening or how someone is acting
1:28 right now that is at the moment. I hope
1:31 you understood the basic difference of
1:34 being and being. Now let's understand
1:38 eight main uses of the verb being. The
1:40 first use is to talk about someone's
1:44 behavior or attitude. One thing to
1:47 remember, we always use being with verbs
1:52 like [music] am, is, are, was, or were.
1:54 When we describe someone's temporary
1:58 behavior, something that's true right
2:01 now, but not always. In such situations,
2:04 we use being. Take a look at these
2:08 examples. You are being rude. It means
2:11 you're acting rude right now. It's not
2:14 your normal behavior. You're just acting
2:18 rude right now. She's being kind today.
2:22 It means she's behaving kindly at the
2:26 moment. He was being silly at the party.
2:29 This means he acted silly, but that's
2:32 not his usual behavior. They are being
2:35 noisy again. It means it's happening
2:38 now. Now, here is a common mistake what
2:42 people make. If you say he is rude, this
2:45 means it is his character. That's how he
2:49 is. He's rude. But if you say he's being
2:51 rude, that's just his temporary
2:54 behavior. He's not rude in general or
2:56 that's not his character. I hope you got
2:59 the difference. Moving on to the second
3:02 use of being. We use being in the
3:05 passive voice. It's used for actions
3:09 happening now or around now. We use
3:12 being in the continuous form of passive
3:15 voice to show that something is being
3:18 done right now. Here are some examples.
3:22 The road is being repaired. Again, we
3:23 not interested who is repairing the
3:26 road. The focus is on the repair of the
3:29 road. The movie is being filmed in
3:34 Mumbai. The car is being washed. Dinner
3:37 is being served. The project was being
3:41 discussed when I arrived. So in all
3:43 these examples, we are not interested
3:47 who did it. The focus is on the action
3:49 or what's happening. And in such
3:53 situations, we use being. So in short,
3:54 if you want to say something is
3:56 happening at the moment, you will always
3:59 use being. And if it is being done by
4:02 someone, this is the structure we use.
4:06 We use is, are, was, were plus being
4:09 plus the past participle. All right,
4:12 let's move on to the third use of being.
4:15 We also use being to show a temporary
4:18 state or condition. It's used to show
4:21 how someone is feeling at the moment.
4:24 It's not a permanent state, right? It's
4:27 just a temporary state. For example,
4:29 she's being difficult today. Possibly
4:32 she's showing a lot of tantrums, but
4:35 that's not her usual way of behaving.
4:39 He's being very quiet lately. Now,
4:41 possibly something is disturbing him,
4:43 but that's not how he is. He's a very
4:45 energetic person, but but these days,
4:48 he's pretty quiet. You're being
4:51 negative. Try to stay positive. So,
4:53 being negative is not his usual
4:55 behavior, but possibly because of
4:58 something, he's being negative. They
5:01 were being cautious because of the So
5:03 possibly someone is driving and because
5:07 it's raining they are extra cautious.
5:09 All right, moving on to the next use of
5:12 being. It's used to describe roles or
5:16 identities. We use being to talk about
5:20 someone's role, position or identity,
5:23 who or what someone is acting as or
5:28 serving as. Now in this case being acts
5:32 like a noun. It names the state or role
5:34 of a person. Take a look at these
5:39 examples. She loves being a teacher. So
5:44 here it's acting as a noun. He enjoys
5:48 being a father. I hate being late for
5:53 meetings. Being a student isn't easy.
5:55 Being a leader comes with
5:58 responsibility. So in all these
6:02 sentences, being acts like a noun. Now
6:04 let's move on to the fifth use of being.
6:08 We sometimes use being to explain the
6:10 reason for something or the cause for
6:13 something. And it is especially used in
6:17 formal or written English. And in such
6:21 sentences we always use for or because
6:25 of. For example, she was praised for
6:28 being honest. So here we are giving a
6:32 cause or a reason why she was praised.
6:34 He got a promotion for being
6:37 hardworking. So again he got a promotion
6:39 and what is the reason for it? Because
6:42 he works hard. They were criticized for
6:47 being rude. I thanked her for being
6:50 helpful. So the reason for me thanking
6:54 her is because she was helpful. Now to
6:58 form such sentences we use for plus
7:02 being plus adjective. And this structure
7:05 is commonly used to talk about a reason
7:07 for something or a cause for something.
7:09 I hope it was pretty easy to understand
7:12 this use of being. Moving on to the
7:15 sixth use of been to form continuous
7:19 passive voice sentences with having. Now
7:23 in advanced English, we use having been
7:27 or been together to describe actions in
7:30 perfect or passive forms. Take a look at
7:34 these examples. The document has been
7:37 being reviewed for weeks. Now you might
7:39 say this sentence is incorrect because
7:42 we have used been and being in one
7:45 sentence but this sentence is absolutely
7:48 correct. Now in spoken English we rarely
7:51 say being and being. We don't use it in
7:54 spoken communication but it's common in
7:58 writing to show an ongoing process. So
8:00 here the document has been being
8:03 reviewed for weeks. It means the review
8:06 of the document is an ongoing process.
8:09 It's continuing and this is an advanced
8:11 English structure. If you're appearing
8:13 for an ISL written exam and if you use
8:16 this structure, I'm sure you'll get
8:19 eight plus bands. Now, let's move on to
8:21 the seventh use of being. We can also
8:25 use being as a noun and it is especially
8:29 used to mean a living creature or
8:31 existence of something. For example,
8:35 human beings are social creatures. Every
8:39 living being deserves respect. She
8:43 believes in spiritual beings. It means
8:46 she believes in the spiritual world. The
8:50 forest is full of mysterious beings.
8:52 This means the forest has a lot of
8:56 unseen or mysterious creatures or
8:59 animals. So here in all these sentences
9:01 we have used being as a noun and it
9:05 means a form of life. And now let's move
9:08 on to the final use of being. We often
9:11 use being after prepositions or certain
9:16 verbs just like a noun but here it's a
9:18 gerand form. Take a look at these
9:22 examples. I'm tired of being ignored.
9:26 She apologized for being late. He
9:29 admitted to being wrong. They are
9:33 excited about being chosen. Thank you
9:37 for being so patient. So in all these
9:40 sentences being is functioning like a
9:44 gerand describing an action or a state.
9:47 So those were all the eight uses of
9:50 being. Now let's test your
9:52 understanding. You have four questions
9:56 on your screen and in the blank you have
9:59 to choose the right option either been
10:01 or being. If you want you can pause the
10:04 video here, take a screenshot and drop
10:06 your answers in [music] the comments. So
10:08 that's it for today's lesson. We covered
10:10 all the main uses of being from
10:13 temporary behavior to passive voice and
10:15 even when being acts as a noun. Now, if
