selecting the appropriate needle size is
very crucial to obtain optimal efficacy
in your treatment and also to improve
the experience of your patient during
the treatment
in this video we will explain how to
select the best needle size for your
treatment and we will show you some live
examples to make you visualize what are
the differences between needles of
there are two variables related to
needle size
diameter and length
the diameter of an acupuncture needle
can range from 0.16 millimeter to 0.30
millimeter with the 0.20 and 0.22
millimeter being the most commonly used
the length of an acupuncture needle can
longer for special types of long needles
the ones we use the most commonly in the
thicker needles will produce a stronger
dirtier or needling sensation
but the insertion is more painful than
thinner needles and the after effect is
also stronger
thicker needles tend to burn less than
thinner needles which make them very
useful when using warm needles and
Electro acupuncture
thinner needles are relatively painless
but will produce a weaker dirt seal
the choice depends mainly on the
patient's sensitivity and the
preferences and score of the clinician
for example Japanese acupuncturists tend
to use thin needles while acupuncturists
from the tongue School tend to use
the length of the needle depends mainly
on the point location
millimeter needles are generally more
practical to needle the face sometimes
the fingers and the feet
30 millimeter needles are commonly used
for the arms and legs
40 and 50 millimeter needles are used
for deep needling in the lumbar area
the length of the needle will also
depend on the constitution of the patient
patient
shown needle being used for thinner
patients and long needles used for
larger patients
finally the depth of the needling can be
adjusted according to the season
for example deeper in Winter shallow in summer
summer
or the level of the disease deeper from
internal condition shallower or an
we're going now to see the influence of
needle size on the needling sensation
so for this video I will use stomach 36
which is a very common Point using acupuncture
acupuncture
and I will start with our needle which
is our 0.22 millimeter and this is a
very common size this is a medium range size
size um
yep okay can you feel the needle
so how strong is your feeling on a scale
of the euro to 10.
around four yep okay that's very good so
I'm going to remove the needle and I
will change
so I'm not going to use our Point 18
okay can you peel the needle
this is slightly lighter so I'll say
anything about two two one is ten okay awesome
awesome
um I will now try to use a larger
um slightly large larger needle which is
a 0.35
so this is
so how do you feel now coming down this
is slightly more painful um
um
and eat eight of ten yes so this is
absolutely normal because I know I just
use our larger needle so you feel a
stronger sensation it will give a
stronger stimulation
and this is absolutely normal
I'm now going to show you how we use
moxa rolls on top of the needle to do
warm needling techniques now you can
check our other video on mock Sebastian
if you want the details about this technique
um so we're going to put this mixer row
okay so you can see quite clearly here
that's on this side the large needle
0.35 millimeter it's very still it
doesn't Bend at all but we can see here
on the point 80 millimeter that's the
needle is bending and this can be quite
dangerous because the nail could come
out or the moxa will get too close to
the skin and there might be some bone so
we can see that from warm needling it's
better to have a slightly a larger
I'm going to show you now how to select
the length of the needle according to
the location of the points you are going
to use
so we are going to show you some points
on the face on the scalp on the hand on
the arms abdomen legs and feet we're
going to show you also on the lower abdomen
abdomen
so let's start with the face for the
face we generally use thin needle
um insertion if um
um
so I can show you the side of the needle here
so I will show you on in tongue points yeah
here we are
now going to show you on the scalp for
the scalp we generally use 30 millimeter
or 40 millimeter needles because we are
okay
we're now going to go to the hands the
hands we generally use 25 millimeter needles
for the arms we can use 30 millimeters
or 40 millimeters needles I'm not going
depending on the size of the patient you
might want to use 25 30 40 millimeter needles
needles
because this patient is relatively thin
we are going just to use a 25 millimeter needle
and I'm going to do the legs now
all the legs you can also choose 30 to
40 millimeters who you might you might
even want to choose larger needles if
right for the
beats we can use 25 millimeter needles
okay
so this is how we're just the you select
this length of the needle
I'm going to show you now how to adjust
the size of the needle depending on the
side of the body of the patients so we
have two models here today one is Tino
and one is a bit larger so for this
patient for example if you want to
needle the upper back I would select a
15 to 25 millimeter needle for the lower
back I would select a 30 to 40
millimeter needle and for the legs 30 or
40 millimeters as well for these
patients for the upper back I might
select a 25 or 30 millimeter needle for
the lower back I may choose a 40 or 50
millimeter needle and for the legs as
well 40 or 50 millimeter will be more appropriate
