have options for motorcycle routes? In

whether or not Google Maps has a
motorcycle mode for 2025 and we'll talk
about some tips on how to use Google
Maps for routes and some features that
it has to help motorcyclists. And if you

The fact is Google Maps does not have a
dedicated motorcycle mode globally,
which is a bummer. Come on, man. I know,
right? With all the new tech and AI
coming out of these multi-billion dollar
companies like Google. You would think
it wouldn't be too much to ask for
Google Maps to have an option for
motorcycle riders around the world to
plan their trips. But here's the thing.
It does offer features that can be
useful for motorcyclists. In some
countries and regions like parts of
Asia, Google has rolled out a
two-wheeler mode which provides routes
tailored for motorbikes and scooters. It
can avoid roads where they're restricted
and it can favor more narrow roads or
shortcuts that vehicles can't take. It
also adjusts for travel time estimates
based on motorcycle specific conditions
like traffic patterns or even the
ability to lane split in some areas. But
for most places outside these regions,
including North America, there's no
official motorcycle mode yet as of 2025.
But the fact that they've rolled out
this option for some regions already
gives us hope that they can develop this
feature for those of us in North America
and around the globe. But even if you
are planning motorcycle routes in a
region where the two-wheeler mode is not
yet available, Google Maps does have
some features that can be very helpful
for motorcycle trip planning. And here's
a few tips on how to optimize it best,
whether you're using a laptop or your
mobile device on Google [Music]

Maps. The good news is you can still use
Google Maps effectively for motorcycle
trips by tweaking just a few settings.
So, if you've got your laptop set up
with Google Maps open, once you put in
point A and point B destinations, you'll
notice the algorithm is set up to get
you there the most timeefficient way,
which will probably include highways.
But you do have the option to select
avoid highways right here. This will get
you automatically off the freeway
completely and give you a route that has
back roads which are often much more fun
than straight open freeways. And you can
also select avoid tolls if you prefer
routes without those. But if you do
choose this option alone, just keep in
mind it will still give you some
highways. And here's how you can find it
on your mobile device. When you've got
the route up, click on the three dots on
the upper right hand corner and click
options. Here's where you can select the
same items on your mobile device. And
don't forget, once the route loads, you
can zoom in and manually drag the path
to include roads you know are best for
riding, like twisty mountain passes or
coastal routes. This can get a bit
tedious, but it lets you at least
customize your trip. Now, some riders
like to see what kind of elevation
changes there might be on their routes.
The second step is you can check
elevation and terrain changes. Google
Maps doesn't directly show elevation
profiles for driving roads, but one way
to check is the bicycle setting. This
gives you a rough idea of elevation
changes down here, but it's not perfect
for motorcyclists because it's still
meant for pedal bikes. And another way
to check elevation changes is to switch
to the terrain view. This will highlight
hills, mountains, and valleys, helping
you to spot potentially fun or
challenging sections. And it gives you a
heads up on some steep climbs or
descents. And don't forget this simple
yet effective measure as well, which is
to check the street view for road
conditions. We always try to show a few
seconds of this kind of footage on this
YouTube channel when we highlight the
best roads to take by motorcycle. The
reason is because it gives you a real
world perspective on what it's actually
like to be viewing the road. And it's a
great way to preview what the road
actually looks like, whether it's
narrow, if there's forgiving shoulders,
and the like. And another great way to
use Google Maps is the fact that you can
share and save your routes. Once you've
got a route you like and you plan on
using your phone to navigate while
you're riding, you can save it offline
by downloading the map area on your
phone in case you lose a signal. All
right, so say I want to ride through
Texas Hill Country. So on my phone's
Google Maps, I'll type in a nearby city
and then I'll scroll over to download
offline map. Then you just select the
amount of area you want to have saved on
your phone. Just keep in mind the larger
area is going to take up more space on
your device, but that way you'll have it
saved on your phone even when you don't
have any signal. I can't tell you how
important that's been for me on some of
my trips when you're riding through a
remote area and you're using Google Maps
to navigate your ride. All right, so
those are some tips on how to utilize
Google Maps. But what if you have more
than one route you want to have mapped
out? If you spent any time on Google
Maps, you may have noticed you can only
map out one route at a time. In other
words, say you want to ride a few
different great motorcycle roads in one
region or state, and you want to have
these separate routes laid out so you
can see how to plan your trip. Well,
there is another map tool offered by
Google. It's called Google My Maps. This
is designed for creating and sharing
custom maps, organizing information, and
highlighting specific locations or
routes. And it allows for collaborative
map creation with anyone you may be
riding with on a planned trip. For
instance, if you're looking to do a road
trip in the US or Canada, and you want
to map and have laid out the best roads
within each state, we've got this
feature on our Patreon for our members.
Our maps show where all the roads are
located so you can plan your motorcycle
road trip in the US and Canada more effectively.

So, Google Maps is not perfect for US
motorcycle trips because it's mainly
designed for cars. The fact is, Google
Maps doesn't explicitly account for
things that motorcyclists care most
about when planning a trip, like road
conditions, sharp curves, or motorcycle
related hazards, unless you're in a
region with a two-wheeler mode. So,
while Google Maps can work for
motorcycle routes with some creativity,
it's definitely not a one-stop shop
solution, and many times it won't give
you the most scenic or fun routes. For
those details, you can pair Google Maps
with different paid apps or websites
like ours over at great motorcycleyclroads.com.
motorcycleyclroads.com.
Websites like ours are specifically
built with motorcyclists in mind and
they offer features like turnbyturn
navigation for twisty routes as well as
GPX files available for download which
you can use for your navigational units
like Garmin and TomTom devices. So if
you are planning routes in a region
where the two-wheeler mode is not
available yet, Google Maps is a good
starting point for help planning your
ride. Let us know in the comments
