to be honest I didn't know much about
Portugal before I arrived and I
basically just winged it until now
looking back there are several things I
wish I would have known beforehand after
living here for 3 years and learning
some valuable lessons the hard way I
decided to create this video with a list
of the 12 things not to do in Portugal
to help you travel more mindfully no
matter where you're visiting from if
you're interested in moving to Portugal
I just put out my complete moving to
Portugal guide at David portugal. comom
there's a link in the description below
so without further Ado here are 12
things you should not do while visiting
Portugal to ensure a smooth respectful
and enjoyable trip number one don't
forget to use respectful titles this is
probably one of the most important
points that I'll mention in this video
the Portuguese highly value politeness
and addressing people correctly is
crucial when speaking to older
individuals professionals or strangers
use Senor which is Mis for men and
Senora which is M for women this
demonstrates courtesy and respect
especially in formal settings it can be
considered impolite or overly casual to
address someone by their first name
unless they invite you to do so when
visiting Portugal you might notice that
not everyone adheres to this practice
but using titles reflects good manners
good upbringing and social awareness
Portuguese people appreciate it when
visitors and foreigners show this level
of politeness as it indicates that you
respect their cultural values number two
don't talk about Messi a word of caution
even if you believe it to be true do not
tell the Portuguese that Messi is the
best football player in the world such a
statement is likely to provoke strong
disagreement even from those who are not
particularly interested in football it
can spark a passionate conversation that
might escalate into aggressive behavior
in Portugal there is only one savior
more popular than Jesus Christ himself
and that is the one they refer to
globally as Ronaldo but here in Portugal
Cristiano see while the Portuguese are
generally tolerant and peaceful this can
all change at a moment's notice if you
criticize their football club believe me
when I say there's a reason they don't
Portugal number three don't assume
everyone speaks Spanish or English if
you didn't know Portuguese is the
official language of Portugal not
Spanish for this while some people may
understand Spanish or English it's
respectful to learn a few basic
Portuguese phrases for example saying
OBU which means thank you if you're a
male or obada if you're female as well
as bondia which means good morning which
can leave a positive impression with the
locals it's surprising how many visitors
to Portugal use gracias which may make
the locals feel like you didn't put any
effort to learn before your visit if
you're interested in learning some very
helpful Portuguese phrases my friend
Anita has put together a Portuguese
daily conversations Master course I put
a link in the description below if
you're interested number four don't be
overly loud in public one Surefire way
to stand out as a foreigner in Portugal
is by being very loud not saying the
Portuguese can't be loud as well but
it's generally not very welcomed because
most Portuguese value politeness and
quietness in public spaces avoid
shouting or causing unnecessary
disturbances especially in restaurants
cafes or on public transport Americans
can certainly be known for broadcasting
their opinions or thoughts out to the
world and this is something I've been
guilty of for sure I have decided to
keep a pretty low profile as being loud
instantly gives away our nationality and
to some people that can be a walking
dollar sign so it's better to keep quiet
and try to stay ambiguous number five
don't skip the smaller cities and
Villages Portugal is a country rich in
diversity and charm that extends well
beyond Lisbon and Portu I would highly
recommend going into the interior of the
country as you can find some of the best
food and experiences and what I would
consider really the truly authentic
Portuguese experience some of the nature
places like Jes up in the north and some
of the castles like monaj and alanu
offers a snapshot in time that in my
opinion is quintessentially Portuguese
and one of my favorites Eva features
Rich historical significance featuring a
remarkable Roman Temple and vibrant
local markets amidst its Charming Town
don't underestimate Portuguese Cuisine I
often meet people visiting Portugal for
the first time who say the food isn't
very good however let me put it this way
if you don't appreciate Portuguese
Cuisine it might be because you prefer
overly seasoned food rather than simple
highquality dishes that stand out on
their own when world-renowned chefs like
the late Anthony Bourdain and Gordon
Ramsey continually praise Portuguese
Cuisine it's worth paying attention to
try to avoid playing it safe by sticking
to International dishes or tourist
oriented restaurants that keep you in
your comfort zone often tourist trap
restaurants serve poor versions of what
they claim to be Portuguese Cuisine
instead seek out local eateries filled
with taxi drivers and patrons speaking
only in Portuguese this is the same
principle I apply when choosing any
restaurant if native people of a Cuisine
aren't dining there the food is probably
not that great trust me when I say you
will be rewarded if you venture off the
beaten path step out of your comfort
zone and be adventurous and try some
unique dishes like snails trust me
you'll thank me later before we dive
back into the 12 things not to do in
Portugal I want to take a moment to
discuss something truly important this
topic is something that I genuinely care
about and I believe it's crucial for
everyone to be aware of spam emails have
become a significant Challenge and now
they're even reaching out via text
cleverly attempting to capture your
personal information but you might be
wondering how these spammers get a hold
of your email and phone number the
unfortunate truth is that they likely
purchased your information there's a
whole Market dedicated to buying and
selling our personal data and it's
unsettling to think how much they know
about you each time you agree to the
terms of service on a website they gain
insights into your browsing history your
name your location and even your shop
Shing habits information that many of us
would prefer to keep private the great
news is that these companies are
required to delete your stored personal
data if you request it but how do you
tackle the daunting task of reaching out
to hundreds of companies to demand the
removal of your data that's where the
Fantastic sponsor of today's video incog
comes in when they approached me about
sponsoring this video I was genuinely
excited because I believe there needs to
be an effective solution for this issue
since I started using incog I've noticed
a significant decrease in spam emails
and fewer unwanted text messages what I
had to do was create an account Grant
access to work on my behalf and that's
it one of the coolest features is their
dashboard where I can track exactly what
information is being removed the results
have been quite eye openening it brings
me real Peace of Mind knowing that my
personal information like my address and
phone numbers aren't readily available
all over the internet as it used to be
right now now if you use the code Dave
Portugal at incog
docomo an incredible 60% off the annual
plan now that's a great deal thanks to
incog you can take control of your
personal data and keep it from being
scattered all over the internet now back
to the video number seven don't be
disrespectful in Fu performances if you
attend a Fu show it's crucial to remain
quiet and avoid moving around during the
performance f is a deeply emotional and
traditional form of Portuguese music and
maintaining silence demonstrates respect
for both the performers and the art form
recently I experienced a photo
performance where some tourists Converse
the entire time which I found to be
absolutely disrespectful and quite
appalling and traditionally clapping was
not done after photo performances as the
music was not intended to be applauded
however this practice has changed in
recent years with audiences from ious
cultures often feeling compelled to clap
but don't worry you won't be kicked out
for doing so number eight don't overlook
tipping etiquette tipping in Portugal
differs from tipping practices in the
United States while it's not mandatory
many people in Portugal do tip and it's
generally appreciated in restaurants
leaving a 5 to 10% tip is common if the
service is good while rounding up the
bill is typical in cafes I often tip and
it's not seen as is disrespectful here
unlike some cultures where tipping may
be rejected this is not the case in
Portugal given the wages tend to be
lower here compared to the European
Union average tipping can be a nice
gesture however some Portuguese people
feel frustrated that Americans often
treat tipping as a standard practice
which will probably lead to some
backlash in the comments on this topic
number nine don't get too drunk not
being able to hold your liquor or
getting too drunk is definitely looked
down upon in Portugal you see Portugal
and most of southern Europe have
mastered the art of day drinking they
always seem to be drinking wine or high
proof leor known as agar vent which
roughly translates to fire water unlike
the United States It's Perfectly Normal
to drink wine or beer at lunchtime but
that doesn't mean it's normal to abuse
it in fact the only people that get
overly drunk in public are usually the
village degenerates whose wives are
smacking them with a wooden spoon
begging them to come home and do their
chores around the house and trust me
everybody wants to have a drink with
this guy but nobody wants to end up
being this guy number 10 don't disregard
local driving rules much like Italy
Portugal is known for its aggressive and
sometimes impatient driving style but if
you're coming from places like New York
City or Miami you'll likely feel right
at home however if you come from an area
where people usually obey speed limits
and consistently use turn signals
driving in Portugal make come as a shock
here you might find yourself behind a
sweet elderly couple driving way too
slow or being overtaken by a race car
driver who acts like they're on the
autobond and there's really no middle
ground because of this it's crucial to
be a defensive driver in Portugal and to
be prepared for unexpected situations as
for road rage it's often best to adopt a
goldfish mentality and have a short
memory otherwise you might give yourself
a heart attack number 11 don't
underestimate the sun and the ocean in
Portugal the sun in Portugal can be
particularly intense especially in the
picturesque region of the algo to
protect your skin from harmful Rays it's
essential to apply a generous amount of
sunscreen before heading out and when it
comes to swimming in the Atlantic Ocean
be mindful of the powerful waves and
strong currents that can catch you off
guard Portugal is known for having some
of the biggest waves in the world there
are safe beaches particularly in the
alga garve and south of Lisbon but it's
always important to exercise caution to
ensure a safe and enjoyable experience
in the water and there are often no
lifeguards present in the winter months
to save you here so make sure to use
caution and lastly this one should go
without saying but don't forget to
respect sacred sites respecting sacred
sites in Portugal is essential for
preserving the country's cultural
historical and spiritual Heritage
Portugal is home to numerous sacred
places including an ient churches
monasteries chapels and pilgrimage sites
such as Fatima and the geronimos
monastery which hold deep religious and
historical significance here these sites
are not only architectural Marvels but
also spaces of reflection worship and
connection for many people disrespectful
Behavior such as loud disruptions
inappropriate clothing or vandalism can
diminish the sanctity of these spaces
and harm their cultural Integrity by
showing reverence and adhering to proper
etiquette visitors help Safeguard these
Treasures for future Generations while
honoring the traditions and beliefs of
the communities who cherish them
respecting sacred sites ensures that
they can continue to inspire awe and
provide spiritual soulless for centuries
to come I hope this video has helped you
understand how to respectfully engage
with the locals and appreciate
Portugal's beautiful culture if you plan
to visit Portugal remember to leave it
better than you found it respect ECT the
cities the nature and of course the
people support local shops and consider
venturing off the beaten path and who
knows you might just have yourself a
good time if you want to see more videos
