i've been involved in some aspect of
arts and gallery education for nearly 40
years and in that time we experienced a
wide range of roles
so to receive recognition for all that
work is extremely heartening reassuring
and very encouraging
it's a great honour but feels a bit
overwhelming too
for like all my colleagues and peers
we're just doing our jobs
i always wanted to work in education and
after i finished our college i
gravitated very swiftly and easily to
working in arts education teaching with
community and higher education [Music]

it was not until i moved to organism 35
years ago that i really began to
establish a routine of work that
involved working in community education
some part-time teaching and operative
design at rotney college
and initially on the freelance basis
working here at the pr centre before
being appointed in 2005 to the role that
the pier and its highly regarded
collection of 20th and 21st century art
has been central to my work and has been
a had a profound impact on my career
the founder of the gallery margaret
gardner not only gifted an extraordinary
group of artworks to ortny but had a
real desire and commitment that the work
should be accessible enjoyed by others
especially children and young people
she has left a tremendous legacy
which we as a team value with a real
passion and responsibility
we are currently celebrating our 40th
year and it's been a great opportunity
to reflect and look back on those early days
days
to what has been accomplished since then
and indeed think about and look forward
to the future
the collection is very much at the heart
and core of what we do
it provides the benchmark that we can
match everything else against
a real highlight of our work has been
the development of peer group our young
persons programme started in 2007.
over that time it has been a real
privilege to see the journeys that many
of these young people have taken whether
as artists are now working in the
gallery and museum sector themselves
most recently we've been working with
our youngest audiences three and
four-year-olds in a partnership with
orkney's preschool practitioners to
encourage engagement with contemporary
i believe that i've had a somewhat
privileged position at the peer arc
centre where learning and engagement
underpin the gallery's core mission
working at managerial and strategic
level and also facilitating and
delivering activities directly to our
diverse audiences
i undertake a broad range and breadth of
tasks and responsibilities that give me
an overview that is relatively unique in
gallery education
it's provided me with an insight of the
bigger strategic challenges that face
the sector today as well as the
practicalities that are dealt with by
gallery educators and artist educators
on a day-to-day basis
something that i hope i've been able
over the years to contribute to the
inspirational work that engaged us
i can't receive this award and wouldn't
be receiving it if it wasn't for my
exceptional colleagues at the pier and
what i've learned and gleaned from
working alongside them they're an
amazing bunch of very committed people
who go way above and beyond and i hope
it is a team that we can continue to
shape and form a secure and vibrant
future not only for the peer art centre
but for the visual arts sector as a whole
