Norway has the second longest coastline in the world.
Remote and challenging areas are littered with plastic debris
transported high up north by ocean currents.
Since 2020, a coastline stretching 21,500 kilometers
has been cleaned from plastic pollution through the Clean Up Norway program.
2850 tons of plastics have been removed
by professional coastal cleaners through a staggering 230,000 work hours.
But how did we finance the world's largest professional cleanup?
In 2017, the Norwegian Retailers Environment Fund,
or NREF, was established.
A joint agreement between the Norwegian government
and the biggest retail organizations in Norway created a private environment fund
to help Norway achieve EU requirements on the use of plastic bags.
As opposed to a government imposed plastic bag tax,
the NREF gets roughly $0.20 USD
for each plastic bag sold by Norwegian retailers.
The money is earmarked to fund solutions
addressing environmental issues due to plastics.
Through this unique funding mechanism, the NREF has supported over
750 different projects so far, from cleaning our coastline
to researching alternatives to plastics, while at the same time
cutting plastic bag consumption in Norway by approximately 50% since 2016.
And the Clean Up Norway program continues beyond 2023.
Scientists discovered that as much as 95% of
the microplastics has been eliminated after a clean up.
To that effect, the NREF and the Clean Up Norway program
are revolutionary new tools to fight plastic pollution.
