of this pardon since the 1980s believing

european nations signed the helsinki
accords increasing trade between the
east and west and guaranteeing human
rights protections
by the mid-1970s the u.s entered
recession as wages decreased and the pay
gap between workers and management began
widening some of those u.s companies
moved production overseas in the wake of
these new trade treaties to exploit
low-wage foreign workers
other companies moved to anti-union
states in the south and west from
virginia to texas and over to california
factories began closing in the north and
midwest and commenters called it the
rust belt which we've talked about that
term before
the south attracted business but it
struggled to share those profits middle
class whites often moved to the south
from other locations and grew more
prosperous but native southerners white
and black found themselves mostly excluded
excluded
new right politicians constructed an
identity centered on small government
opposing civil rights workers rights and
regulations on business
and these business-friendly politicians
successfully fused conservative
protestantism and this free market in
the ideology into a potent political
force about freedom and god-given rights
they advocated allowing segregation and
discrimination as a matter of private
choice that the government really
shouldn't be involved in regulating
so there you have it what caused the
conservative backlash of the late 60s
and early 70s what was the southern
strategy be sure you can define that
we'll be talking about it in future
lectures of course
what events eroded trust in america's
public institutions its government and
what groups comprised the new right
